Chapter 1

The bank employee ordered a little boy to leave before he called security—then the boy placed one black card on the counter and calmly asked him to check the balance.
“GET OUT OF HERE—BEFORE I CALL SECURITY!”
The shout silenced the entire Manhattan bank.
I turned and saw a small boy standing alone at the counter.
He couldn’t have been older than eight.
He flinched, stepped back, and stared at the floor.
“I just want to check my account,” he whispered.
The employee laughed.
“Kid, this isn’t a playground.”
People started watching.
A security guard moved toward the boy.
But instead of leaving, the boy slowly reached into his backpack.
He placed a small envelope on the counter.
Then he pulled out a black bank card.
The employee picked it up with two fingers.
“This better not be some kind of joke.”
The boy said nothing.
The employee entered the card information into his computer.
At first, his expression didn’t change.
Then his fingers stopped.
He frowned and typed again.
“What the…”
The security guard paused behind him.
The employee leaned closer to the screen.
His face suddenly changed.
He typed faster.
Then he grabbed the phone beside his keyboard.
“Something’s wrong.”
The boy finally looked up.
“What does it say?”
The employee ignored him and entered another command.
His hands started trembling.
“This account can’t belong to you.”
The boy stepped closer.
“Just tell me the number.”
Nobody in the bank was laughing anymore.
The employee stared at the screen like he had seen a ghost.
Then the branch manager rushed out of her office.
She looked at the card, then at the boy.
“Where did you get this?”
The boy quietly pushed the envelope toward her.
“My dad told me to bring it here if he disappeared.”
The manager opened the envelope.
She read the first line and immediately locked the bank’s front doors.
Then she looked at the employee who had threatened the boy.
“Call nobody.”
Her voice was shaking.

She turned back to the child.
“Your father owned this bank.”
