Chapter 1

My Son Threw Me Out of the House I Raised Him In—Then the Lawyer at the Door Said My Name

I was seventy-two when my only son put my suitcase on the front porch and told me I couldn't live with him anymore.

“Daniel, this is my home too,” I whispered.

He wouldn't look at me.

His wife, Vanessa, stood behind him with her arms crossed.

“You signed the house over to Daniel,” she said. “You don't own anything here anymore.”

My stomach tightened.

Three years earlier, after my husband died, Daniel had convinced me to add his name to several documents.

He promised it was only to help manage things if I got sick.

“You said I could stay here for the rest of my life.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Mom, things changed.”

Then Vanessa pushed my suitcase farther onto the porch.

“We need the room.”

I looked past them at the dining table where I had served Daniel birthday cakes for thirty-five years.

“You're throwing me out tonight?”

Daniel finally met my eyes.

“There's a senior apartment complex nearby.”

I couldn't believe those words came from my son.

I reached for my phone.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Who are you calling?”

“My daughter.”

Daniel's face suddenly hardened.

“Don't involve Sarah.”

That was when I knew something was wrong.

Sarah and Daniel hadn't spoken in almost a year.

I had always believed it was because of an argument over their father's estate.

But Daniel suddenly looked terrified that I might call her.

I dialed anyway.

Before Sarah answered, a car pulled into the driveway.

A man in a suit stepped out carrying a leather folder.

Daniel's face went pale.

Vanessa whispered, “Why is he here?”

The man walked straight toward me.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

He opened the folder and looked at Daniel.

“I'm your late husband's attorney, and I need to speak with you before you leave this property.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“You have no business being here.”

May you like

The attorney slowly pulled out an envelope with my husband's handwriting across the front.

Then he said, “Actually, Daniel, this concerns the document you never told your mother existed.”
