Chapter 5

I found Lauren in the kitchen.

She was making tea.

My sister looked up and smiled.

“You okay?”

I placed my phone on the counter.

“No.”

Her smile disappeared.

“What happened?”

“Why did twenty-five thousand dollars from Ethan’s trust go into an account with your name?”

The mug slipped slightly in her hand.

She caught it before it fell.

That tiny reaction told me enough.

“You know.”

“Sarah.”

My stomach dropped.

“How much do you know?”

She placed the mug down.

“It isn’t what you think.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“I can explain.”

“Please do.”

Lauren glanced toward the hallway.

“Is Ethan asleep?”

“Yes.”

She lowered her voice.

“Daniel lent me money.”

“From my son’s trust?”

“I didn’t know that.”

“When?”

“Seven months ago.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-five thousand.”

“Exactly the amount missing.”

She nodded.

I stared at her.

“For what?”

Her eyes filled.

“My mortgage.”

“What?”

“I was behind.”

“You told me you refinanced.”

“I lied.”

I stepped back.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“Because Dad had just died and you were dealing with the estate.”

“So you called my husband.”

“He offered.”

“Daniel never offers money without a reason.”

“I know that now.”

My pulse increased.

“What did he ask for?”

“Nothing at first.”

“At first.”

Lauren looked down.

“Then he started asking questions.”

“What questions?”

“About you.”

My chest tightened.

“What about me?”

“Your work schedule.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

“When you stayed late. Whether you were sleeping okay. How much you were drinking.”

“I barely drink.”

“I told him that.”

“What else?”

Lauren’s voice became smaller.

“He asked whether you ever seemed confused after Dad died.”

I stared at her.

“What did you say?”

“That you were grieving.”

“Did you tell him I forgot things?”

“I said you forgot your purse at my house once.”

My mouth fell open.

“You gave him that?”

“I didn’t know what he was doing!”

“You took twenty-five thousand dollars from him and then answered questions about my mental health.”

“I didn’t know the money was Ethan’s!”

“That is not the only problem!”

She started crying.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

I thought about the folder.

The notes.

Sarah forgets grocery item.

Memory issues.

Every ordinary human moment had been collected.

Lauren had helped.

My own sister.

“Did Daniel ever ask you to sign anything?”

Silence.

My heart sank.

“What?”

“Nothing official.”

“What did you sign?”

“A statement.”

I felt dizzy.

“What statement?”

“He said it was for his attorney in case you two separated.”

“When?”

“Two months ago.”

“Before I knew anything.”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

“That I had noticed you were under stress.”

“What else?”

“That you sometimes worked long shifts.”

“What else?”

“Sarah.”

“What else?”

Tears ran down her face.

“That I had concerns about how much responsibility you were carrying.”

I stared at her.

“You signed a statement helping my husband build a custody case.”

“I didn’t know that’s what it was.”

“Then why sign it?”

“He said he was worried about you.”

“And the money?”

She flinched.

That answered everything.

“He reminded you.”

“He never threatened me.”

“He didn’t have to.”

I laughed through tears.

“He gave you money, then asked for help.”

Lauren covered her face.

“I’m sorry.”

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I walked away.

“Sarah.”

“Don’t.”

“Please.”

I turned.

“Did you know about Vanessa?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the forged signatures?”

“No.”

“Did you know about Ethan’s trust?”

“No.”

“Did you know Daniel planned to leave me?”

Lauren hesitated.

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“He told me he was unhappy.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“About three months ago.”

I closed my eyes.

“You knew.”

“He didn’t say it was decided.”

“You let me sleep in your house while knowing you had signed something for him.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“That means never.”

I walked upstairs.

Ethan was asleep.

I sat on the edge of the guest bed and stared at him.

Everyone Daniel touched became part of the plan.

Patricia.

Lauren.

Vanessa.

Me.

Even Ethan.

He found what each person feared.

Then he used it.

Lauren feared losing her house.

Patricia feared losing her son.

Vanessa feared losing her investment.

And I had feared losing my marriage so much I ignored every sign that something was wrong.

The next morning, I told Rebecca everything.

She didn’t judge Lauren.

She simply asked for the statement.

Lauren still had a copy.

When Rebecca read it, her expression changed.

“This is more significant than she described.”

My heart sank.

“What does it say?”

“Lauren states you had become forgetful and emotionally overwhelmed.”

I looked at my sister.

“You said it only mentioned stress.”

“I didn’t remember every line.”

Rebecca continued.

“She states she was concerned your work schedule limited your availability for Ethan.”

Lauren whispered, “Daniel wrote it.”

“You signed it.”

“I know.”

Rebecca looked at her.

“Were you told this would be used in custody proceedings?”

“No.”

“Were you told Sarah had agreed Daniel could use it?”

“Yes.”

My jaw tightened.

Rebecca asked, “Did Daniel tell you Sarah had mental health problems?”

“He said she was becoming unstable from grief.”

“Did you believe that?”

“No.”

“Then why sign?”

Lauren started crying again.

“Because I owed him money.”

There it was.

Plain.

Ugly.

True.

Rebecca nodded.

“Thank you.”

Lauren looked confused.

“For what?”

“For saying it clearly.”

My sister looked at me.

I looked away.

I wasn’t ready.

Maybe someday.

Not then.

That afternoon, Vanessa contacted me.

Directly.

Her text said:

We need to talk before Daniel makes me responsible for everything.

I stared at it.

Rebecca told me not to meet her alone.

So we arranged a meeting at Rebecca’s office.

Vanessa arrived wearing a white blouse and black pants.

She looked completely different from the woman kissing Daniel in my living room.

Nervous.

Exhausted.

Human.

I hated that.

It was easier to hate a villain than a person.

She sat across from me.

“I’m sorry.”

I said nothing.

Rebecca started the conversation.

“Ms. Cole, you understand I represent Sarah.”

“Yes.”

“You may want your own attorney.”

“I have one.”

“Good.”

Vanessa folded her hands.

“Daniel is lying.”

I almost laughed.

“You came here to tell me that?”

“He lied to me too.”

“That doesn’t erase the affair.”

“I know.”

“How long?”

“Thirteen months.”

I flinched.

One month longer than Daniel admitted.

“What did he tell you?”

“That your marriage was over.”

“We took a vacation together nine months ago.”

“He said it was for Ethan.”

“Our anniversary was seven months ago.”

She looked down.

“I knew by then.”

At least she stopped pretending.

“You knew he was married.”

“Yes.”

“You kept seeing him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She swallowed.

“Because I loved him.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So did I.”

Silence.

Then Rebecca asked about the fifty-five thousand dollars from Ethan’s trust.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?”

“You received money transferred from an account belonging to Ethan.”

“No.”

“We have records.”

She looked genuinely shocked.

“I received fifty-five thousand from Castle Ridge.”

“When?”

She thought.

“About five months ago.”

“For what?”

“Repayment.”

“Of your investment?”

“Yes.”

My stomach turned.

Daniel had taken money from our son’s trust and used it to repay his mistress.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“How much did you invest total?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

“Why?”

“Daniel showed me a development project.”

“Does it exist?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“There is land.”

“That isn’t my question.”

“No.”

Rebecca continued.

“What was your involvement with the hidden account?”

Vanessa went pale.

“What hidden account?”

“The one you asked Daniel about in Ethan’s video.”

She closed her eyes.

“I meant the reserve account.”

“What is that?”

“Daniel said Sarah didn’t know about it because it was for taxes.”

I stared at her.

“How much?”

“At one point, almost five hundred thousand.”

My chest tightened.

“Whose money?”

“I thought business money.”

“Daniel told me it was mine.”

Vanessa looked shocked.

“He said that?”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“He told me it came from investors.”

“Maybe both.”

Rebecca asked, “Do you have records?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“On my laptop.”

“Preserve them.”

Vanessa nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“There’s something else.”

I almost smiled from exhaustion.

There was always something else.

“What?”

“Daniel asked me to sign an affidavit.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“What does it say?”

“That the money I received came from Sarah.”

My body went still.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Why would I send you money?”

“He wanted me to say you were aware of the business.”

Rebecca’s voice sharpened.

“Did you sign?”

“No.”

“Do you have the document?”

Vanessa opened her bag.

She placed it on the table.

I read the first paragraph.

It claimed I had personally approved transfers from my inheritance.

That I knew Vanessa was a business investor.

That I had even spoken to her by phone.

All lies.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

My stomach dropped.

It said that when I discovered Daniel and Vanessa’s “personal relationship,” I became threatening and vowed to destroy them both financially.

I stared at Vanessa.

“I never spoke to you before that day.”

“I know.”

“Then why did Daniel think you’d sign this?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because he has something on me.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“What?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then whispered, “I falsified documents for Castle Ridge.”

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?”

“Investor reports.”

“Were they fake?”

“Some numbers were altered.”

“By you?”

“Daniel told me to.”

Rebecca asked, “Did you know it was false?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said the company needed time.”

Same phrase.

Always.

Time.

One more month.

One more lie.

One more person paying for his choices.

Vanessa looked at me.

“He said if I refused to sign the affidavit, he’d give everything to investigators and say the fraud was mine.”

I stared at her.

“You helped him commit fraud.”

“Yes.”

“And now he’s using it to control you.”

“Yes.”

For the first time, I saw the architecture of Daniel’s life.

Not relationships.

Leverage.

He didn’t collect people because he loved them.

He collected secrets.

Debts.

Fear.

Something he could use when loyalty disappeared.

Rebecca asked Vanessa to provide everything through her attorney.

Then I asked one final question.

“What did Daniel mean about San Diego?”

Her face changed.

Rebecca noticed too.

“What San Diego plan?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“He told you?”

“Ethan recorded him.”

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel owns a condo there.”

My mouth went dry.

“No, he doesn’t.”

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

“Three years.”

I stared at her.

Three years.

Before the affair.

Before Castle Ridge supposedly became desperate.

“Whose name?”

“A company.”

“Which company?”

Vanessa whispered, “South Bay Ventures.”

Rebecca wrote it down.

“What was Daniel planning to do there?”

“He told me after the divorce, he would relocate.”

“With Ethan?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

My heart started pounding.

“Vanessa.”

“He said he would get primary custody.”

“Because he planned to make me look unstable.”

She nodded.

“He said you’d eventually agree because you couldn’t afford the legal fight.”

My eyes filled.

“He took my inheritance to make sure I couldn’t fight him.”

Vanessa looked at the table.

“I think so.”

My breath disappeared.

Every piece finally aligned.

He wasn’t only stealing money.

He was removing my ability to resist.

At that moment, Rebecca’s assistant rushed into the room.

“Rebecca.”

“What?”

“There’s a problem.”

She handed over a phone.

Rebecca listened.

Her expression changed.

Then she looked at me.

“Sarah, Daniel just filed for emergency custody.”

My heart stopped.

“On what basis?”

Rebecca’s jaw tightened.

“He says Ethan is unsafe with you.”

I almost laughed.

“Because of what?”

She hesitated.

Then said, “He submitted Lauren’s statement.”

I turned toward my sister.

“And photographs.”

“What photographs?”

Rebecca looked sick.

“Pictures of prescription medication in your bedroom.”

I stared at her.

“I don’t take prescription medication.”

“I know.”

May you like

Then she added the part that made my blood run cold.

“The bottles have your name on them.”
