Chapter 1

My sister mocked me for marrying a “poor mechanic” at her luxury Chicago wedding—then her groom went deathly pale when my husband walked into the reception.

For years, my sister Vanessa treated my husband, Jake, like he was beneath her.

Jake owned a small auto repair shop on the South Side of Chicago.

He worked with his hands, came home tired, and never cared about expensive clothes.

Vanessa cared about nothing else.

So when she married Ethan Whitmore, the son of a wealthy investment family, she made sure everyone knew she had “married up.”

At the reception, she stopped beside our table with several bridesmaids.

She looked at Jake and smiled.

“Still fixing old cars?”

Jake nodded politely.

“Every day.”

Vanessa laughed.

Then she turned to me.

“Sarah, I still can’t believe you married a mechanic.”

People nearby heard her.

A few laughed awkwardly.

I felt Jake’s hand squeeze mine under the table.

“Vanessa, it’s your wedding,” I said. “Enjoy it.”

But she wasn’t finished.

“My husband manages companies,” she said proudly.

Then she looked Jake up and down.

“Yours changes oil.”

Jake simply smiled.

“Congratulations, Vanessa.”

That seemed to irritate her even more.

She leaned toward me.

“You could’ve had this life too if you’d had better standards.”

Suddenly, Ethan appeared behind her.

His eyes landed on Jake.

And every bit of color disappeared from his face.

“Mr. Bennett?”

Vanessa turned around.

“You know him?”

Jake slowly stood.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Her new husband looked terrified.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Why are you calling my sister’s mechanic ‘Mr. Bennett’?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

His father, Richard, hurried across the ballroom next.

The moment he saw Jake, he stopped cold.

Then he held out his hand.

“Jake, I didn’t know you were coming.”

Vanessa stared between them.

“What is happening?”

Richard ignored her.

“We’ve been trying to reach you for two weeks.”

Jake’s expression hardened.

“I know.”

Ethan whispered, “Dad, not here.”

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Tell me who he is.”

Richard looked at my sister, then at the hundreds of guests surrounding us.

Finally, he said, “That repair shop is something Jake runs because he enjoys it.”

Vanessa blinked.

“What does that mean?”

Jake reached into his jacket and placed a folded document on the table.

Ethan immediately stepped backward.

My sister picked it up.

Her smile vanished before she reached the second page.

At the top was the name of Ethan’s family company.

And beneath it was Jake’s signature.

Vanessa looked at my husband with shaking hands.

“Why does this say you own forty-eight percent?”

Jake didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Because tomorrow morning, your husband has to explain to Jake where thirty-two million dollars disappeared.”

The ballroom went quiet.

Vanessa’s mouth hung open.

The document slipped from her fingers and fluttered to the floor.

No one moved.

May you like

No one breathed.

And for the first time in my life, I saw my sister look small.
