Chapter 10

Three days later, I sat in the Franklin County courthouse.

The preliminary hearing for Vanessa and Hale was underway.

The evidence against them was overwhelming.

The bat with my father's blood and hair.

The forged power of attorney.

The bank records Sarah had saved.

The contents of the safety deposit box.

The recording of Vanessa trying to blackmail me outside the bank.

And Mark.

Mark had been arrested at the construction office, trying to delete files from the company server.

Sarah had arrived just in time.

The IT specialists had recovered everything he'd tried to destroy.

And now Mark was sitting in the witness stand, testifying against his wife and her lawyer.

He had made a deal.

Full immunity in exchange for his complete cooperation.

I watched him from the gallery, sitting beside my father.

Mark looked small and broken on the stand.

He told the court everything.

How Vanessa had first suggested "borrowing" money from his father.

How it had escalated from small loans to systematic theft.

How she had manipulated him, controlled him, convinced him that his father was old and confused and didn't need the money anyway.

How she had planned the entire attack at the house, stage-managing every detail to make it look like my father was the aggressor.

How she had found the old letters about Joe and the fire and concocted the blackmail scheme.

How she had sent him to destroy the records while she distracted me.

It was a damning testimony.

Vanessa stared at him from the defense table, her face a mask of hatred.

Hale looked like he wanted to disappear.

When Mark finished testifying, the judge looked at the defense.

"Does the defense have any witnesses?"

Vanessa's lawyer stood.

"No, Your Honor."

The judge nodded.

"Based on the evidence presented, I find probable cause to believe the defendants committed the crimes alleged. They will be held without bail pending trial."

The gavel came down.

Vanessa was led out of the courtroom, screaming curses at Mark, at me, at the judge, at everyone.

Hale followed silently, his head down.

As the courtroom cleared, Mark stood by the witness stand, watching them go.

I walked over to him, my father beside me.

Mark looked at us, his eyes red and swollen.

"Dad," he said, his voice breaking. "I'm so sorry. I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't even expect you to talk to me ever again. But I had to do this. I had to make it right."

My father looked at his son.

I saw the conflict in his eyes.

The love he still felt for the boy he had raised.

And the pain of what that boy had become.

"You hurt me, Mark," he said quietly. "You hurt me worse than Vanessa ever could. Because you were my son."

Mark nodded, tears streaming down his face.

"I know."

My father stood there for a long moment.

Then he reached out and touched Mark's face.

"But you did the right thing in the end," he said. "And that... that counts for something."

Mark broke down completely.

My father pulled him into an embrace, and the two of them stood there, crying in the empty courtroom.

I stepped back, giving them space.

Sarah came over and stood beside me.

"Quite a show," she said.

"Yeah," I said. "Family drama at its finest."

"You okay?"

I looked at my father and brother, still holding each other.

"I will be," I said. "It's going to take time. And things will never be the same. But we'll heal."

Sarah nodded.

"For what it's worth, you did good. They would have destroyed him if you hadn't shown up."

"I know," I said. "And that's why I'll never regret it."

We stood there in silence for a while longer.

Then my father looked over at me and smiled through his tears.

I smiled back.

The road ahead would be long.

There would be more court dates.

More paperwork.

More painful conversations.

My father would have to rebuild his company, his finances, his life.

Mark would have to earn back our trust, if that was even possible.

And I would have to learn to look at my brother without seeing the man who had betrayed our father.

But we were alive.

We were together.

And the people who had tried to destroy us were behind bars.

As we walked out of the courthouse into the bright sunlight, I felt something I hadn't felt in days.

Hope.

Whatever came next, we would face it together.

Because that's what family does.

Even when family hurts you.

Even when family betrays you.

You find a way to forgive.

You find a way to heal.

May you like

And you find a way to move forward.

Together.
