Chapter 1

My Mother-in-Law Threw My Son Outside in the Pouring Rain—Then I Learned Why My Husband Never Stopped Her

I knew something was wrong when I pulled into my mother-in-law’s driveway and saw a small figure sitting beside the garage.

It was my eight-year-old son, Ethan.

He was soaked from head to toe.

“Ethan!”

I jumped out of the car and ran toward him.

His lips were trembling.

“Mom, Grandma won’t let me inside.”

I wrapped my jacket around him.

“What happened?”

He looked toward the house.

“She said I ruined her dinner.”

I stormed to the front door and started pounding.

My mother-in-law, Linda, opened it with an annoyed expression.

“Why is my son outside?”

“He needed consequences.”

“It’s pouring rain!”

“He spilled juice on my tablecloth.”

I stared at her.

“So you threw an eight-year-old outside?”

“He needs to stop being spoiled.”

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Mom, please don’t yell.”

That broke something inside me.

“How long has he been out here?”

Linda shrugged.

“Maybe two hours.”

I couldn’t believe her.

Then my husband, Mark, appeared behind her.

I expected him to be furious.

Instead, he sighed.

“Sarah, don’t turn this into another family drama.”

I froze.

“You knew?”

He wouldn’t look at me.

Ethan suddenly whispered, “Daddy was here when Grandma pushed me outside.”

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Mark.

“Is that true?”

Linda stepped between us.

“He deserved it.”

Then Ethan reached into his wet pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I recorded what Grandma and Daddy said after they locked the door.”

Mark’s face changed instantly.

“Give me that phone.”

Ethan backed away.

Then the recording started playing.

And the first sentence I heard had nothing to do with the spilled juice.
