Chapter 1

My mother-in-law slapped my daughter across the face at Sunday dinner and called it “discipline.” She forgot I was still standing right behind her.
The crack of that slap froze the entire table.
My twelve-year-old daughter Ava fell sideways out of her chair and hit the hardwood floor.
Her hand flew to her cheek.
Tears filled her eyes before she even made a sound.
I was on my knees beside her in seconds.
“Baby, look at me,” I whispered, lifting her gently. “Are you hurt?”
Across the table, my mother-in-law Sandra folded her napkin like nothing had happened.
“She needed to learn respect.”
My husband Daniel stood up so fast his chair scraped the floor.
“Mom, what did you just do?”
Sandra pointed at Ava like my child was trash.
“She rolled her eyes at me in my own house.”
Ava clung to my arm and started shaking.
“I only said I didn’t want more potatoes.”
Sandra leaned forward.
“And she said it with attitude, just like her mother.”
That was the moment something inside me snapped.
I helped Ava to her feet and moved her behind me.
Then I walked straight to Sandra.
She smirked and said, “Sit down before you embarrass yourself.”
My hand hit her cheek so hard her pearls twisted sideways.
The whole room gasped.
Sandra looked stunned for one second.
Then she stood up, pointing at me.
“How dare you hit me?”
I slapped her again.
“And how dare you touch my daughter?”
She tried to lunge at me, but I shoved her back into her chair.
Then I slapped her again.
“You don’t discipline my child.”
Another slap.
“You don’t humiliate her.”
Another slap.
“And you never raise your hand to her again.”
Daniel grabbed my wrist, but not to stop me.
He was staring at his mother with a face I had never seen before.
Ava’s voice came out small behind me.
“Mom… tell them what Grandma said before she hit me.”
The room went dead quiet.
I turned slowly toward my daughter.
May you like
Ava wiped her tears and looked straight at Daniel.
“She said I should be grateful you kept me even though I’m not really your daughter.”
