Chapter 2

At exactly 7:22 p.m., Melissa entered the living room carrying a silver medication tray.
Claire looked at the clock.
Eight minutes remained until the event already written in the journal.
Melissa placed a syringe beside Ethan’s IV line.
“His evening medication,” she said.
Claire did not move.
“What is it?”
“You have asked me that every night.”
“And you have avoided answering every night.”
Melissa’s expression tightened.
“It is what Dr. Hale prescribed.”
“That is not an answer.”
Claire stood between Melissa and the bed.
The security camera above the fireplace turned with a soft mechanical click.
It was tracking them.
Melissa noticed it too.
Her eyes shifted toward the lens before returning to Claire.
“Move aside.”
“No.”
“Mrs. Whitmore, your husband requires this medication.”
“Then show me the prescription.”
Melissa reached for the syringe.
Claire grabbed the dark journal from the side table.
She opened it to the page she had seen earlier.
“Seven-thirty,” Claire read aloud. “Claire administered a heavy sedative.”
Melissa froze.
Claire held the page toward the camera.
“It is 7:23. I have not administered anything.”
“Put that down.”
“You wrote it before it happened.”
“It was a documentation mistake.”
“You documented a specific action under my name.”
“You are exhausted.”
“That is what Margaret said before handing me sleeping pills.”
Melissa’s face lost its color.
Claire stepped closer.
“Who told you to write this?”
No answer came.
Claire turned toward the camera.
“My name is Claire Whitmore. It is 7:24 p.m. I am refusing to administer an unidentified medication to my husband. The nurse’s journal falsely states that I already gave it to him.”
Melissa lunged for the book.
Claire pulled it away.
The syringe rolled from the tray and landed on the carpet.
For one second, neither woman breathed.
Then Ethan’s right hand moved.
It was barely noticeable.
A twitch of two fingers against the white sheet.
Claire’s heart slammed against her ribs.
“Ethan?”
Melissa stared at the hand.
“He is having a muscle spasm.”
Ethan’s fingers moved again.
This time, they curled toward Claire.
She rushed to the bed.
“Ethan, can you hear me?”
His eyelids trembled.
Melissa reached for the syringe on the floor.
Claire kicked it beneath the couch.
“What are you doing?” Melissa snapped.
“What are you doing?”
Ethan dragged in a rough breath.
His eyes opened halfway.
They were unfocused at first.
Then they found Claire.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I’m here,” she whispered. “I’m right here.”
His mouth moved.
No sound came out.
Claire leaned closer.
“What did you say?”
Ethan’s gaze shifted toward the dark journal in her hand.
His finger lifted weakly.
He pointed at it.
“The log?” Claire asked.
He blinked once.
Melissa backed toward the doorway.
Ethan forced air through his throat.
“They…”
His voice was almost nothing.
Claire lowered her ear to his lips.
“They what?”
“Drugged…”
His eyes closed for a second.
Claire touched his face.
“Stay with me.”
Ethan opened them again.
“Not… coma.”
Melissa suddenly turned and hurried from the room.
Claire looked up.
“Melissa!”
The nurse locked herself inside the medication room.
Claire heard drawers opening.
Glass clinked.
Ethan caught Claire’s wrist.
His grip was weak, but desperate.
“Don’t… let her…”
“Let her do what?”
“Dose me.”
Claire looked toward the closed door.
The clock changed to 7:29.
Ethan pointed again at the journal.
“Why did they want you sedated?”
His lips barely moved.
“Company.”
Claire shook her head.
“What about the company?”
“Transfer.”
The clock changed to 7:30.
At that exact moment, Ethan’s heart monitor began sounding a rapid alarm.
Claire looked at the screen.
His pulse was climbing.
Melissa burst from the medication room with a different syringe in her hand.
“He is unstable. Move!”
“No!”
“He could go into cardiac arrest.”
“What is in that syringe?”
“A rescue medication.”
“Show me the label.”
“There is no time.”
Melissa tried to push past her.
Claire seized her wrist.
The two women struggled beside the bed.
Ethan’s monitor screamed.
“Let go!” Melissa shouted.
“Tell me what it is!”
The security camera continued recording.
Melissa looked toward it.
Fear flashed across her face.
Then the front doors unlocked by themselves.
Heavy footsteps entered the foyer.
Claire released Melissa and turned.
Owen Pike, Richard’s head of security, walked into the room with two guards.
He was a former police officer with a square jaw and a permanent look of suspicion.
“Mrs. Whitmore,” Owen said, “step away from the patient.”
Claire’s stomach dropped.
“How did you get here so fast?”
“We received an alert.”
“What kind of alert?”
“A medical disturbance.”
“The alarm started thirty seconds ago.”
Owen did not answer.
He looked at Melissa.
“Has the dose been given?”
Claire heard the question clearly.
Not, “Is Ethan all right?”
Not, “What happened?”
Has the dose been given?
Melissa lowered the syringe.
“No.”
Owen’s expression darkened.
“Why not?”
“Because I stopped her,” Claire said.
Owen faced her.
“You are interfering with medical care.”
“My husband woke up.”
The guards glanced at Ethan.
His eyes were closed again.
Owen stepped to the bed and waved a hand in front of Ethan’s face.
No response.
“He does not appear awake.”
“He spoke to me.”
“What did he say?”
Claire hesitated.
Ethan’s fingers pressed faintly against her palm.
A warning.
Do not tell them.
“He said my name.”
Owen looked unconvinced.
Melissa moved toward the IV.
Ethan remained still.
Claire understood.
He was pretending to be unconscious.
She blocked Melissa again.
“No medication until I speak to an independent doctor.”
“Your father-in-law holds medical authority,” Owen said.
“The proxy is forged.”
“That is a serious accusation.”
“So is writing a care log before the care occurs.”
Claire lifted the journal.
Owen’s eyes sharpened.
“Give me that.”
“No.”
“It belongs to the medical staff.”
“It contains false statements about me.”
“Give it to me, Claire.”
She backed toward the fireplace.
The camera followed her.
Owen stepped closer.
“You are not thinking clearly.”
“That phrase seems popular in this family.”
“Your husband needs treatment.”
“My husband needs protection.”
Owen extended his hand.
“Last warning.”
Claire looked at Melissa.
The nurse would not meet her eyes.
Then Claire noticed something written on the back of Melissa’s hand.
A number.
7-1-4-9.
Melissa subtly turned her palm inward, hiding it from Owen.
Claire did not understand.
Owen reached for the journal.
Claire moved fast.
She threw it into the cold fireplace, grabbed the iron poker, and smashed the camera mounted above the mantel.
The lens shattered.
Everyone shouted at once.
Owen seized Claire’s arm.
She swung the journal against his chest and broke free.
“Ethan!” she cried.
His eyes snapped open.
Owen stopped.
The guards stopped.
Melissa stopped.
Ethan looked directly at the security chief.
His voice was weak, but clear enough.
“Get out.”
Owen stared at him.
“Mr. Whitmore?”
“Get… out of my house.”
“Your father hired me to protect you.”
“My father… tried to bury me.”
Silence filled the mansion.
Owen’s face changed.
Not into shock.
Into calculation.
He reached for his radio.
“We have a change in patient status.”
Static answered.
Then Richard’s voice came through the radio speaker.
“Put him back under.”
Claire felt ice spread through her veins.
Owen switched off the radio too late.
Everyone had heard it.
Ethan closed his eyes, exhausted by the effort.
Claire looked at Owen.
“You heard him.”
Owen placed his hand on the weapon at his belt.
“I heard a confused patient.”
Melissa began shaking.
Claire turned to her.
“What does 7-1-4-9 mean?”
Owen’s head snapped toward the nurse.
Melissa stepped backward.
“I don’t know what she means.”
“Yes, you do.”
Owen advanced.
“Melissa, give him the medication.”
Melissa looked at Ethan.
Then at Claire.
Then at the broken camera.
For the first time, the nurse seemed to realize that the people paying her might also destroy her.
She dropped the syringe.
It hit the marble floor and cracked.
Clear liquid spread across the stone.
“I won’t do it,” she whispered.
Owen’s voice became cold.
“That was not a request.”
Melissa pulled a small key from her pocket and tossed it to Claire.
“Medication cabinet,” she said. “Bottom drawer. The real records are behind the false panel.”
Owen grabbed Melissa.
Claire ran.
One of the guards blocked the hallway.
Claire drove her shoulder into him and slipped past.
Behind her, Ethan’s monitor began alarming again.
She reached the medication room and locked the door.
Owen pounded against it.
“Open this door!”
Claire shoved the key into the cabinet.
The bottom drawer opened.
Inside were sealed vials, forged dosage sheets, and a second black journal.
She pulled out the false wooden panel.
A phone was hidden behind it.
The screen was still glowing.
A message from Grant filled the display.
7:30 dose must be witnessed.
Make sure Claire signs.
Flight gives us distance.
If Ethan wakes, increase it.
Claire’s hands shook.
She photographed the message with her own phone.
Another message appeared.
It came from Richard.
Why is his monitor active?
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
There was a second camera hidden inside the smoke detector.
They were still watching.
The door behind her shuddered under another blow.
Owen shouted through the wood.
“Claire, you are making this worse.”
She opened the burner phone’s call history.
Dr. Victor Hale.
Grant Whitmore.
Richard Whitmore.
A final contact was saved only as London Counsel.
Claire pressed the emergency call button on her own phone.
No signal.
The mansion’s network had been blocked.
She tried the landline.
Dead.
The doorframe began to crack.
Then she remembered the number on Melissa’s hand.
7-1-4-9.
Claire entered it into the burner phone.
A hidden folder opened.
Inside were photographs of Ethan’s prescriptions.
Audio recordings.
Payment transfers.
And a video.
Claire pressed play.
Richard appeared on the screen, standing in Ethan’s hospital room six days earlier.
His voice was low.
“Keep him unresponsive until the transfer is registered. After that, the outcome no longer matters.”
Grant stood beside him.
“What about Claire?”
Richard smiled without warmth.
“She will sign the logs, or she will take the blame.”
The medication-room door burst open.
Owen entered.
Claire held up the phone.
His face hardened.
“Give me that.”
Claire backed against the cabinet.
May you like
From the living room, Ethan suddenly shouted with every bit of strength he had left.
“Claire, run!”
