Chapter 1

My mother-in-law had me pinned against the kitchen counter when my husband came home from work—and instead of asking what happened, he walked straight over and slapped me.
It started on a Sunday afternoon at our home outside Charlotte, North Carolina.
My husband, Ryan, was working late, and his mother Linda showed up without calling.
She walked inside like she owned the place.
“I’m here to see my grandson.”
My eight-year-old son, Noah, immediately moved behind me.
“I don’t want to go with Grandma.”
Linda’s face hardened.
“You’ve taught him to disrespect me.”
“Linda, he said no.”
She grabbed Noah by the arm.
I pulled her hand away.
“Don’t touch him like that.”
She shoved me backward.
Then she slapped me across the face.
Noah screamed, “Stop hitting my mom!”
Linda reached for me again.
This time, I pushed her away.
She grabbed my hair.
We crashed into the kitchen table as I fought to get her off me.
That was the exact moment the front door opened.
Ryan walked in wearing his work clothes.
“Mom?”
Linda instantly released me and started crying.
“She attacked me!”
I was still trying to catch my breath.
“She hit me first, Ryan.”
He didn’t ask Noah what happened.
He didn’t even look at the mark on my face.
Ryan crossed the kitchen and slapped me so hard I stumbled into the counter.
“Never put your hands on my mother!”
Noah started sobbing.
“Dad, Grandma started it!”
Ryan pointed upstairs.
“Go to your room.”
I stared at the man I had been married to for eleven years.
Then Linda smiled behind his back.
That tiny smile told me everything.
I quietly reached for my phone.
“You both should probably see what the kitchen camera recorded.”
Ryan suddenly froze.
Linda stopped smiling.
But before I could open the video, Noah came running back downstairs holding an old phone I had never seen before.
“Mom,” he whispered, “Grandma gave Dad this phone and told me never to touch it.”
Ryan lunged toward him.
I grabbed it first.
The screen lit up with dozens of messages between Ryan and his mother.
Then I read the newest one.
“Make her lose control today. We need proof before the custody hearing.”
I looked up slowly.
May you like
“What custody hearing?”
And Ryan’s face told me this fight had been planned long before Linda ever walked through my door.
