Chapter 1

"In the eyes of my parents, I had forever been the ultimate disappointment of the family. ""You are nothing short of a worthless failure,"" my mother m0cked cruelly. ""Exactly like that pa/the/tic old man r0tting away in the shed!"" My bl00d instantly turned to ice. I smashed open the locked door and discovered my grandfather st@rving, shivering uncontrollably, and barely clinging to life in the shadows. With cold precision, I lifted my phone. ""Move in right now,"" I commanded. ""We have highly dangerous suspects currently on site."" My parents chuckled, entirely convinced I was just putting on a bluff... right up until heavily armed tactical trucks blockaded the house... and my grandfather managed to whisper one single sentence that changed our reality forever...
Hot steam wafted up from the expensive cuts of meat, but the atmosphere in the dining room was suffocatingly freezing. For the last three years, I had been the family's biggest letdown. The only reason I even bothered coming home was because my grandfather—the singular person who actually loved me—had inexplicably stopped returning my phone calls.
“Are you still clinging to that pathetic little government job?” my father, Michael, inquired, not even giving me the courtesy of looking up from his meal.
“I am still currently employed,” I, Claire, answered with total composure.
My little brother, Brandon, offered a snide smirk. He was flashing a luxury timepiece that cost way more than the property he allegedly couldn't afford to pay off. “She probably just files parking tickets all day for a living.”
My mother, Diane, lifted her crystal champagne glass with an elegant flourish. ""You are completely useless, Claire. Just like that pathetic old man rotting away out in the shed.""
The entire room plummeted into a de:ad, heavy silence. The soft clinking of silver forks completely stopped. My bl00d ran cold.
""What exactly did you just say?""
The smirk on her face faltered, but she hastily masked it. “It was obviously just a joke.”
I pushed up from the table so vi0lently that my dining chair crashed hard onto the floorboards. My eyes frantically scanned the room, connecting the disturbing clues: Michael's bone-white knuckles gripping a keychain, the freshly caked mud on Brandon's expensive designer boots, and the security camera mounted above the kitchen sink—which had been turned away from the front yard and aimed directly at the decaying backyard shed.
“You locked him outside?” I whispered in horror.
Diane rolled her eyes in annoyance. “He wanders around too much, Claire. We simply had to do it to protect him from his own self!”
I sh0ved roughly past my father and sprinted out into the freezing, pouring rain. The wooden door to the shed was locked up tight with a massive, brand-new steel padlock. From inside the dark structure, a weak, frantic scratching sound could be heard.
Falling back on years of muscle memory and training, I retrieved a specialized tactical entry tool from my handbag. Snap. The heavy door swung completely open.
The nauseating smell of thick mold and damp decay h!t me like a forceful physical bl0w. Huddled beneath a dripping, broken roof, my grandfather lay curled on a filthy, stained mattress. His frail wrists were heavily bruised, and his cheeks were deeply sunken.
“Claire…” he wheezed, his dry, cracked lips shaking. “They told me that you had completely abandoned me.”
A rage so intense and vi0lent surged through my veins that my hands became unnervingly still. Heavy footsteps splashed through the wet mud right behind me.
“I know how this looks, but you do not understand the whole picture,” Michael threatened, his tone dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Get back inside the house.”
I did not even bother responding. I just tapped the hidden panic button on my mobile device, establishing a direct connection to the secured tactical dispatch network.
""Captain Whitmore. Awaiting your direct orders,"" a sharp, highly professional voice blared from the speaker.
My parents froze in shock. Brandon let out a highly nervous, trembling laugh. ""Captain...?""
May you like
I slowly turned around to face them, letting a freezing, calculated smile touch my lips. It was finally time they learned exactly what kind of ""government job"" I actually possess...
