Chapter 3

The police arrived forty minutes later.

Officer Brooks and his partner, Officer Miller, were accompanied by a forensic technician named Carter.

I played the recording for them.

I watched their faces change as the audio played.

First, Megan's cruel question about the pregnancy.

Then the staged accident.

Then her cold whisper.

Then the kick.

Then my parents' coordinated lies.

When the recording ended, the room was silent.

Carter spoke first.

"I'll need to take the phone to the lab for full analysis. But based on initial observation, this appears to be a continuous, unaltered recording. The timestamps match the timeline you've described."

Officer Brooks looked at me with something I hadn't expected.

Shame.

"I want to apologize, Mrs. Parker. We came in here ready to believe three people against one. That was a mistake."

"Will you arrest them?" I asked.

He nodded.

"On what charges?"

"Assault causing grievous bodily harm against Megan. Conspiracy to pervert the course of justice against all three. Filing a false police report. Possibly aggravated battery given the pregnancy."

He paused.

"We'll consult with the district attorney. But this recording changes everything."

"When?"

"As soon as Carter confirms the recording's integrity. Which should be within twenty-four hours."

I leaned back against the pillows.

"Make sure you arrest all three at the same time. Don't give them a chance to coordinate a new story."

"We will."

The officers left.

Nathan sat beside me, his arm around my shoulders.

"Do you think they'll actually do it?" he asked. "Arrest all three?"

"They have to. The evidence is overwhelming."

I looked at him.

"But the criminal case is only the beginning. The civil suit is where I'm really going to destroy them."

Nathan was quiet for a moment.

"Emily, I want them to pay as much as you do. But are you sure you want to do this? It's going to be brutal. They're going to come after you with everything they have."

I thought about my baby.

About Megan's boot driving into my stomach.

About my mother choosing Megan over her own grandchild.

About lying on that floor, bleeding, while my father blocked the door.

"I'm sure," I said.

Nathan kissed my forehead.

"Then I'm with you. Whatever you need. However long it takes."

The next morning, Marcus arrived with a team of four attorneys and three paralegars.

They set up a temporary command center in my hospital room.

Laptops were opened.

Legal pads appeared.

Marcus handed me a stack of files.

"Everything we could find on your parents and Megan in the last twelve hours. Bank records. Property deeds. Employment history. Megan's social media. Even your father's old business records."

I flipped through the files.

"You moved fast."

"You said money was no object. We used every contact we have."

He pulled up a chair.

"Now, tell me what you want. What's the endgame here?"

I looked at him.

"Complete annihilation."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"Be specific."

"I want every asset they own. The house. My father's retirement accounts. My mother's jewelry. Everything. I want them penniless."

"That's aggressive. Even for you."

"They killed my child, Marcus. They framed my husband. They left me to bleed out on their living room floor. Aggressive doesn't even begin to cover it."

He nodded.

"Okay. What else?"

"I want their reputations destroyed. I want everyone they've ever known to understand exactly what kind of people they are. I want them to be pariahs in this community."

"Public opinion is tricky. We can't control it directly."

"We don't have to control it. We just have to give it the truth. And the truth about these people is horrifying enough to do the rest."

Marcus made notes.

"And Megan?"

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Megan is the worst of them. She did the actual kicking. She's the one who killed my baby. I want her to feel the full weight of the law. And I want her to watch as everything her parents ever built gets taken away because of what she did."

Marcus looked up from his notes.

"There's something else. Something you should know."

"What?"

"We found something in your father's business records. About ten years ago, he was involved in a real estate deal that looks... questionable. Very questionable. There are payments to shell companies, missing paperwork, the works."

I sat up straighter.

"Fraud?"

"It looks that way. If we dig into it, we might find more than just civil liability. We might find criminal exposure."

"Then dig. Dig until there's nothing left."

Marcus smiled.

It was the smile he gave when we were about to eviscerate an opponent in court.

"I knew you'd say that."

He stood and addressed the team.

"You heard her. Complete annihilation. I want complaints drafted by the end of the day. Discovery requests ready to go the moment we file. And I want every financial transaction George Collins has made in the last fifteen years on my desk by tomorrow morning."

The team sprang into action.

Nathan watched them work, then turned to me.

"I've never seen you like this."

"Like what?"

"Like you're... in your element. Even here, in a hospital bed, grieving our baby, you're the most dangerous person in the room."

I took his hand.

"This is the only thing that makes the pain bearable right now. Knowing that every move I make brings me one step closer to making them pay."

He squeezed my hand.

"Then let's make them pay."

That afternoon, Carter from forensics called.

The recording was authentic.

No tampering.

No editing.

Continuous and unbroken.

Officer Brooks called five minutes later.

"We're moving in. All three, at the same time. Just like you asked."

I hung up.

I closed my eyes.

I imagined the moment.

Police cars pulling up to the house where I grew up.

Officers knocking on the door.

My mother's horrified face.

My father's blustering anger turning to panic.

Megan's confusion as the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

They thought they had won.

They thought they had destroyed me.

But the truth was just beginning to emerge.

And when it did, their perfect little world was going to burn to the ground.
