Chapter 1

My husband slapped me across the face during an argument—then my father walked through the front door and saw everything.
It happened at our home outside Dallas on a Saturday afternoon.
My husband, Ryan, had been angry since breakfast.
He kept demanding to know why I had moved money from our joint account.
“Because the mortgage payment was missing,” I said.
Ryan’s expression changed.
“That money was mine.”
“It was our savings.”
He stepped closer.
“Stop questioning me.”
I picked up my phone.
“I’m calling the bank.”
Ryan grabbed it from my hand.
“Give it back.”
He threw the phone onto the couch.
I stared at him.
“What are you hiding?”
That was when he slapped me.
The sound echoed through the living room.
I stumbled backward against the table.
Ryan pointed at me.
“You pushed me too far.”
Then the front door opened.
My father, Michael, had stopped by unexpectedly to bring us something.
He froze when he saw my face.
“Did you just hit my daughter?”
Ryan immediately stepped back.
“Stay out of this.”
My father crossed the room.
Ryan shoved him first.
Dad reacted instantly, knocking Ryan backward and putting himself between us.
“You ever touch my daughter again, you answer to me.”
Ryan wiped his mouth and laughed.
“You have no idea what your daughter has done.”
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Ryan grabbed a folder from the kitchen counter.
He threw several bank statements onto the table.
“Tell your father why his company transferred $200,000 into your account.”
My father looked at the papers.
Then his face changed.
“I never transferred this.”
Ryan suddenly stopped smiling.
Dad examined the account number again.
Then he looked straight at my husband.
“Ryan… this is the account number I reported stolen six months ago.”
The room went silent.
I turned toward Ryan.
But my father was already pulling out his phone.
May you like
Because beside Ryan’s name on the statement was another name.
