Chapter 1

My husband’s mistress shoved me to the ground while I was eight months pregnant—and the person he rushed to protect wasn’t me.

I had just left a grocery store in Atlanta when I saw Ryan standing beside a woman near the parking lot.

I recognized her immediately.

Vanessa.

The woman he swore he had stopped seeing months ago.

I walked toward them with one hand supporting my stomach.

“So you lied to me again.”

Ryan’s face went pale.

“Emily, please. Let me explain.”

Vanessa stepped in front of him.

“There’s nothing to explain.”

I looked at her.

“Stay out of my marriage.”

She laughed.

“Ryan said there barely is a marriage.”

I turned toward my husband.

“Did you say that?”

He wouldn’t answer.

Vanessa glanced at my belly.

“You being pregnant doesn’t mean he loves you.”

I took a step back.

“Don’t come near me.”

But she moved closer.

Then she suddenly shoved me with both hands.

I lost my balance and crashed onto the pavement.

A sharp pain shot through my side.

“Ryan!”

I reached toward him.

But he ran right past me.

He grabbed Vanessa by the shoulders.

“Are you hurt?”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“She pushed your pregnant wife!”

A woman nearby rushed over and knelt beside me.

“Don’t move. I’m calling an ambulance.”

My stomach suddenly tightened.

I grabbed my belly.

“Something’s wrong.”

Ryan finally looked at me.

For one second, I thought he was coming over.

Then Vanessa grabbed his hand.

“Ryan, remember what you promised me.”

He stopped.

I looked at him through tears.

“What did you promise her?”

Vanessa slowly placed a hand over her stomach.

Ryan whispered, “Don’t.”

She looked straight at me.

“I’m pregnant too.”

May you like

Then she squeezed Ryan’s hand.

“And he told me he was leaving you before either baby was born.”
