Chapter 1

My husband’s mistress drove straight at me while I was seven months pregnant—and when I woke up in the hospital, my husband was sitting beside her instead of me.

It happened outside a grocery store in Tampa on a Saturday afternoon.

I had just loaded the last bag into my car when I heard someone shout my name.

“Sarah!”

I turned and saw Lauren standing beside an SUV.

I knew exactly who she was.

Three weeks earlier, I had found messages between her and my husband, Daniel.

“Stay away from my family,” I said.

Lauren laughed.

“You still think Daniel chose you?”

I put one hand over my stomach.

“I’m not doing this here.”

I started walking toward my car.

Then I heard an engine rev.

People nearby began screaming.

I turned around.

Lauren’s SUV was coming straight toward me.

I tried to jump aside.

The next thing I remember was waking up on the pavement with strangers surrounding me.

“My baby…”

A woman held my hand.

“Don’t move. The ambulance is coming.”

Lauren’s SUV had stopped against a shopping cart return.

She climbed out and immediately started crying.

“It was an accident!”

I could barely breathe.

“You aimed at me.”

Then another car raced into the parking lot.

Daniel jumped out.

For one second, I felt relief.

Then he ran past me.

Straight to Lauren.

“Are you okay?”

I stared at him from the ground.

“Daniel…”

He finally looked at me.

The paramedics arrived and rushed me to the hospital.

Hours later, a doctor told me my baby still had a heartbeat.

I started crying from relief.

Then a police officer entered my room.

“We reviewed the parking lot cameras.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did they record everything?”

He nodded.

“But there’s something you need to understand.”

He placed a tablet in front of me.

The footage showed Lauren sitting in her SUV minutes before hitting me.

Someone was sitting in the passenger seat.

The officer zoomed in.

It was Daniel.

Then the video showed him getting out, leaning through her window, and saying something before walking away.

There was no audio.

But Lauren’s phone had been recovered from the car.

The officer opened a message Daniel had sent her less than a minute before she accelerated.

My husband had written only four words:

“Make it look accidental.”
