Chapter 1

My Husband Put Me Up for Auction at His Charity Gala as a Joke: “Twenty Dollars for This Useless Wife!”... Until a Stranger Raised His Voice...

Margaret Hale remained immobile as three hundred guests watched her husband, Richard Whitmore, take the stage to reduce nearly three decades of their union to a cruel, public performance.

“We’ll open the bidding at twenty dollars,” Richard declared, his voice booming over the sound system with a smug grin. “Who wants to claim the most dull wife in New York City?”

A roar of laughter erupted throughout the opulent ballroom located on Fifth Avenue.

A wealthy guest playfully lifted his bidding card. Another heckler hollered that he would pay thirty dollars if Margaret possessed the skill to press his laundry. Richard chuckled, clearly basking in the validation of his peers.

Margaret was dressed in a sophisticated navy-blue gown, purchased specifically for this milestone event. It was she who had curated the floral arrangements, perfected the menu, scrubbed the guest list for errors, and coordinated with the audio team for hours. For over a decade, she had been the unseen engine behind the Whitmore Foundation, never once earning a paycheck or earning a spot in the commemorative photos.

Richard often remarked that she preferred the shadows, claiming she lacked the charisma to command a crowd.

On this night, fueled by whiskey, he was determined to prove that assessment.

“Gentlemen, you’re missing out,” he prodded. “She is a competent cook, perfectly silent, and never challenges me. Just be advised, she lacks any sense of humor.”

Margaret felt no tears.

She scanned the room, meeting the eyes of people whose milestones she had celebrated and whose hardships she had comforted. They were laughing now, simply because the man with the microphone had made them feel it was the thing to do.

Then, from the shadows at the rear of the hall, a deep voice cut through the noise.

“I bid 2 million dollars.”

The atmosphere went deathly still.

Richard lowered his hand, his smirk wavering.

Standing by the exit was an older man with silver hair and an impeccable suit. He held no auction paddle.

There was no warmth in his expression.

His eyes were locked entirely on Margaret.

Whispers rippled through the crowd as the man's identity was recognized.

It was Jonathan Mercer, the legendary logistics tycoon and a silent giant in the world of philanthropy. He was a ghost in the world of high-society galas, famously shunning the spotlight.

Richard immediately pivoted back into his practiced, oily charm.

“Mr. Mercer, truly an honor. I assume your bid is intended as a significant contribution to our cause.”

Jonathan strode toward the dais.

“My presence here has nothing to do with your foundation.”

Richard’s grin evaporated.

“I’m afraid I’m at a loss, then.”

“I came here specifically to find Mrs. Margaret Hale.”

Every head swiveled toward Margaret, who looked as stunned as the rest of the room.

“I’ve never met this gentleman,” Margaret said, her voice steady despite the shock.

Jonathan came to a halt right before her.

“You’re right. We are strangers. But searching for you has been my priority for many years.”

Richard gripped the microphone tight enough to turn his knuckles white.

“Looking for her? On what grounds?”

Jonathan ignored him completely.

“Mrs. Hale, please forgive this dramatic intervention. My goal was never to draw attention to you, but rather to bring an end to the humiliation your husband was inflicting upon you.”

He reached into his breast pocket and produced a small, engraved business card.

“I have critical information regarding a woman known as Rebecca Mercer. I would consider it a great privilege if you would join me for dinner tomorrow.”

The name struck Margaret with a sudden, violent intensity.

She couldn't place the context, but it ignited something buried within her, like a long-rusted lock suddenly turning against a forgotten key.

“Very well,” she agreed. “Tomorrow.”
