Chapter 8

The police arrived within minutes.

Marcus was arrested for domestic assault and taken to the station. Claire gave her statement, her voice steady despite the shaking in her hands. Jonathan stayed beside her the entire time, guiding her through the process.

By 9:00 p.m., it was over. Marcus was in custody. Claire had filed for a temporary restraining order.

She went to pick up Sophie from Mrs. Henderson's. Her daughter was asleep in the guest room, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit. Claire carried her to the car and drove home.

The house felt different without Marcus. Empty, but also peaceful. No more late-night arguments. No more hidden texts. No more lies.

Claire tucked Sophie into bed and sat beside her until she was sure her daughter was sleeping deeply. Then she went downstairs and poured herself a glass of wine. She rarely drank, but tonight she needed it.

Jonathan was sitting at the kitchen table, going through paperwork.

“How are you holding up?” he asked.

“Tired,” Claire admitted. She sat down across from him. “But okay. Better than okay, actually. He can't hurt us anymore.”

“He can still try,” Jonathan said. “His lawyer will bail him out tomorrow. And he'll fight the restraining order. He'll fight for custody of Sophie. He'll make this as difficult as possible.”

“Let him,” Claire said. She took a sip of wine. “I have the truth on my side. And I have the evidence.”

Jonathan nodded. “We'll file for divorce first thing in the morning. Full custody of Sophie. And we'll press criminal charges for the fraud and the assault.”

He paused.

“There's something else you should know. The three board members—Vance, Holloway, and Torres—they're planning a special meeting. They want to vote on removing you from control.”

Claire frowned. “Can they do that?”

“They can try. They're claiming that because you have no administrative experience, you're unfit to run the hospital. They're going to ask the court to appoint a receiver.”

“Let them try,” Claire said again. “I may not have an MBA, but I know this hospital. I know every department. I know the patients. I know the staff. That's worth more than any degree.”

“I agree,” Jonathan said. “And we'll make sure the court agrees too. But it won't be easy. Marcus has already been in touch with them. They're coordinating their efforts.”

Claire thought about the twelve million dollars Marcus had stolen. He had probably shared some of it with the board members. They had as much to lose as he did.

“What do we do?” she asked.

“We fight back,” Jonathan said. “Tomorrow, you hold a press conference.”

Claire blinked. “A press conference?”

“Yes. You tell the public the truth. About the fraud. about the staffing cuts. About Marcus's plans. You frame this as a victory for patient care. For the hospital. For the community.”

He leaned forward.

“The board members are counting on public opinion turning against you. They want to paint you as an inexperienced woman who stole her husband's job. But if you get out in front of the story, you can control the narrative. You can be the hero who saved her father's hospital from corruption.”

Claire thought about it. She hated the idea of being in the spotlight. She hated public speaking. But Sophie was counting on her. The hospital staff was counting on her. The patients were counting on her.

“Okay,” she said. “Let's do it.”

The next morning, the press conference was held in the hospital's main auditorium.

Jonathan had arranged everything. Local news stations, newspapers, even a few national health care outlets were represented. The room was packed.

Claire stood backstage, her hands trembling.

“You'll be great,” Jonathan said, squeezing her shoulder. “Just speak from the heart.”

The announcer called her name.

Claire walked out onto the stage.

The flash of cameras blinded her for a moment. She squinted, found the podium, and walked toward it. She set her notes down, looked out at the sea of faces, and took a deep breath.

“Good morning,” she said. Her voice was clear and steady, amplified by the microphone. “My name is Claire Bennett. And I am the owner of Northlake Medical Center.”

She paused, letting the words sink in.

“Six years ago, my father, Dr. William Bennett, founded this hospital. His dream was to create a place where patients came first. Where the highest quality care was available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Where doctors and nurses could practice medicine without being crushed by bureaucracy and profit margins.”

Claire's voice grew stronger.

“For six years, I worked as a nurse in this hospital. I worked alongside the dedicated staff who make this place what it is. I cared for the patients who trust us with their lives. And all the while, I watched as my father's dream was corrupted.”

She told them everything. About the fraud. The twelve million dollars. The dangerous staffing cuts. The plan to have her declared incompetent. The affair. The assault.

She didn't sugarcoat anything. She didn't try to make herself look like a victim. She presented herself as what she was—a woman fighting to protect her father's legacy and the community that depended on them.

When she finished, the room was silent for a beat.

Then the questions started.

“Dr. Bennett, do you have proof of these allegations?”

“Yes. All evidence has been turned over to the FBI and the Seattle Police Department.”

“What will happen to the patients currently in care?”

“Patient care is our top priority. All services will continue as normal. In fact, we will be expanding services and restoring safe staffing levels immediately.”

“Marcus Whitaker claims you manipulated your father into signing the hospital over to you. How do you respond?”

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“My father was a brilliant man. He saw what Marcus was long before I did. And he took steps to protect his life's work. The documents are legal. The transfer is real. And I will not let anyone—least of all Marcus Whitaker—destroy what my father built.”

She answered questions for another twenty minutes. When it was over, she walked offstage, exhausted but exhilarated.

Jonathan was waiting for her, a smile on his face.

“You were incredible,” he said.

“Did it work?”

Jonathan turned on the television in the green room. The local news was already covering the press conference. The headline at the bottom of the screen read: HERO NURSE TAKES BACK FATHER'S HOSPITAL FROM CORRUPT HUSBAND.

May you like

Claire smiled.

It had worked.
