Chapter 1

During the dinner, her husband’s assistant slapped her in front of the entire room... but no one at that table could have guessed that one slap back would be the beginning of the end for their whole empire.

“If you don’t know how to behave at a business dinner, maybe you should go sit with the staff.”

The slap came before the waiter could finish pouring the wine.

For one long second, the private dining room inside the upscale restaurant in Manhattan fell into absolute silence. Wine glasses stopped in midair, the pianist left one note hanging, and 18 executives, investors, and polished spouses stared at Claire Bennett, her face turned to the side from the blow.

The woman who had slapped her was not an ordinary guest.

She was Madison Blake, her husband’s personal assistant.

Madison stood beside her in a silver dress, outrageously expensive heels, and the satisfied smile of someone who thought she had already won a war no one else realized had begun.

“No one ever taught you any manners, did they?” Madison said, loud enough for everyone at the table to hear. “Daniel needs people who stand by him, not a wife who comes here to cause a scene.”

Claire slowly turned her face back.

Her cheek was burning.

Her eyes were not.

At the head of the table, Daniel Bennett, her husband of ten years, turned pale. But it was not because his assistant had humiliated his wife in front of investors from Chicago, Boston, and New York City.

He turned pale because Claire stood up.

“Claire,” he murmured, tightening his hand around the napkin. “Don’t do it.”

That was his first mistake.

Claire looked directly at him.

“Don’t do what?”

Daniel opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

Madison let out a quick laugh.

“See? You don’t even understand when you should keep quiet.”

Claire had not dressed to compete with her. She wore a simple black dress, pearl earrings, and her hair swept up with restrained elegance. No logos, no flashy statement, no need to prove wealth.

That was exactly why Daniel had spent years underestimating her.

Madison expected her to cry.

She expected Claire to look down.

She expected the “discreet” wife to swallow the humiliation, as she had so many times before, just to keep the evening from falling apart.

Claire took one step closer.

And slapped her back.

The crack moved through the room like a final judgment.

Madison stumbled back, one hand pressed against her cheek.

Daniel jumped up so quickly that his chair slammed against the wall.

“Have you lost your mind?” he snapped.

Claire did not look at Madison.

She looked at Daniel.

“What a fascinating question,” she said. “Would you like to repeat it after I introduce myself properly?”

The whole table went still.

Daniel swallowed.

This dinner was meant to be his most important night. Bennett Group was on the edge of purchasing a logistics software company from Austin. The deal needed bridge financing, and everyone sitting there believed Daniel had brought Claire only because the Bennett name still had enough power to open old doors.

What almost no one understood was that Claire did not merely carry the Bennett name.

She chaired the committee of the family trust that had kept Bennett Group’s debt alive for the last four years.

Daniel knew that.

So did his chief financial officer.

Madison did not.

And Madison had just struck the one woman who could shut the entire deal down before sunrise.
