Chapter 1

I woke up in the rain outside the emergency room entrance with broken ribs, one eye swollen shut, and the ghost of Ryan’s fingers still around my throat, while he stood dry under the awning calmly telling the responding officer that I’d attacked him completely unprovoked and all the bruises on my neck were self-inflicted proof I was dangerously mentally ill.

His mother Margaret leaned against him playing the grieving, worried family perfectly, describing in soft, convincing tones how I’d been having violent episodes for months and they’d just been trying to get me help; as they wheeled me inside for treatment Dr. Mitchell was cutting away my blouse when she felt something hard under the medical tape on my chest—a tiny pressure-activated voice recorder I’d hidden there hours earlier, knowing exactly what would happen when I confronted them.

Ryan’s confident smirk faltered for a split second when he saw it sealed into an evidence bag, because that recorder had captured every single threat, every punch, every cold plan to have me declared legally incompetent so they could steal the software company my father had left me; the officer ordered him to stay where he was, and for the first time all night Ryan and Margaret finally realized the victim they’d been so careful to break had been holding all the proof she needed the entire time.
