Chapter 5

Claire stood in the kitchen of her house, watching Liam make a mess of his chocolate chip pancakes. He was wearing his dinosaur apron, his cheeks smudged with syrup, humming the theme song from his favorite cartoon.

This was the part she had to save.

Everything else — the house, the money, the marriage, the name Collins — was replaceable. But this? This happy, messy, perfect little boy? She would burn the whole world down before she let anyone take this from him.

Her phone buzzed on the counter.

Andrew.

"The FBI just picked Mark up for questioning," he said. "CID is right there with them. They’re going at him hard on the insurance policy and the accidents. James’s forensic accountants found more — Mark has been siphoning money from the construction contracts for three years. Cash withdrawals, shell companies, payments to Natalie Brooks’s personal accounts. Over twelve million dollars so far."

Claire flipped the page of the document she was reading. It was a forensic report James had sent an hour ago. Page after page of transfers. To Natalie. To Mark’s mother. To accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Twelve million dollars.

Her money.

Her family’s money.

"And Natalie?" she asked.

"Her accounts are frozen. The FBI picked her up an hour after Mark. She’s talking. Fast. Says Mark told her the insurance money was ‘their future.’ Says he was planning to divorce you after Liam’s fifth birthday, but then he realized divorce would cost him too much. Says he started talking about ‘accidents’ around the time the policy was signed."

Claire’s hand tightened around her coffee mug.

"Did he really…" She still couldn’t say it.

"We don’t have proof yet," Andrew said. "But Natalie is singing. And the forensics team is going over the house today — the stairs, the cars, everything. If Mark touched those brakes or that floor wax, they’ll find it. They always do."

There was a knock at the door.

"That’s probably them now," Andrew said. "The forensics team. Let them in. They’re good. I hand-picked them. And Claire? Whatever they find… whatever you learn… you don’t have to be strong for anyone. You hear me? You can break. Just not in front of Liam."

"I know," Claire said. "I love you, Andrew."

"Love you too, kiddo. I’ll be over after my meeting. We’ll order pizza. The good kind — with extra pepperoni, like when we were kids."

He hung up.

Claire walked to the door and opened it.

Three people stood on her porch. Two men in Tyvek suits, booties, and gloves. One woman in a business suit with a CID badge clipped to her belt.

"Mrs. Collins," the woman said. "I’m Special Agent Carter. This is Agents Miller and Torres. We have a warrant to search the premises. We’ll be as quick and as careful as we can. I promise we won’t disturb anything in your son’s room."

Claire stepped aside.

"Come in. The kitchen is through there. The stairs are straight ahead. The cars are in the garage."

They filed in. The two men immediately set up a work station in the entryway, pulling out lights, swabs, fingerprint powder. Agent Carter stayed with Claire.

"I know this is hard," she said. "Finding out your husband might have hurt you… or tried to… it’s the worst thing in the world. But I want you to know something. We’re going to get to the truth. Whatever it is. And if Mark Collins did what we think he did? He’s never going to hurt you or your son again."

Claire looked at her. She was maybe five years older than Claire, with kind eyes and a scar across her jaw. She looked like she had seen the worst of people and still gotten up every morning.

"Thank you," Claire said.

Liam chose that moment to come running out of the kitchen, covered in syrup, holding up a half-eaten pancake.

"Mommy! It’s a dinosaur pancake! Roar!"

He stopped when he saw the strangers. He hid half behind Claire’s leg, still holding the pancake.

"Who are they, Mommy?"

Agent Carter squatted down so she was eye level with him. She smiled.

"Hi there. I’m Sarah. These are my friends Tom and Jerry. We’re just here to check the house to make sure everything is safe. Is that your dinosaur apron? It’s very cool. I had one just like it when I was your age. Except mine had unicorns."

Liam giggled.

"Unicorns are for girls!"

"Are they?" Agent Carter pretended to be shocked. "Oh no. Then I must have been a very silly little girl. Do you like dinosaurs? What’s your favorite kind?"

"T-Rex!" Liam said, abandoning his shyness. "Because he has big teeth and he roars and he eats the bad guys!"

"He sounds very tough," Agent Carter said. "Well, you just go finish your dinosaur pancake, and we’ll make sure the house is safe for T-Rexes and little boys. Deal?"

"Deal!" Liam yelled, and ran back to the kitchen.

Agent Carter stood up.

"Nice kid," she said.

"The best," Claire said.

The next four hours were a blur.

The forensics team went over every inch of the house. They dusted the stair railing for prints. They took samples of the floor wax from the kitchen and the hallway. They ran diagnostic tests on both cars in the garage — the SUV Claire had been driving the day the brakes went out, and Mark’s sedan. They pulled the hard drive from Mark’s computer in the study. They went through his desk, his closet, his nightstand.

At one point, Claire looked up and saw Agent Carter standing at the bottom of the stairs, holding something in a plastic evidence bag.

It was a small bottle.

Half-empty.

The label was faded, but Claire could still read it: INDUSTRIAL BRAKE FLUID — HIGH PERFORMANCE.

It had been found in the back of Mark’s closet, hidden behind his old uniform shirts.

Claire felt her knees go weak.

Agent Carter was at her side in an instant, guiding her to a chair.

"I’m sorry," she said. "I shouldn’t have let you see that. But Claire… this is good. This is evidence. This means we can prove he was planning something. This means you’re safe."

"Am I?" Claire whispered. "What if he gets out? What if he comes after Liam?"

"He’s not getting out," a voice said from the doorway.

Andrew stood there, holding a pizza box in one hand and a paper bag with soda bottles in the other. He was still in his uniform, his cap tucked under his arm. He looked at the evidence bag in Agent Carter’s hand, and his face hardened. But when he looked at Claire, his expression softened.

"Pizza’s here," he said. "Extra pepperoni. Just like we promised."

Liam came running again.

"UNCLE ANDREW!"

Andrew dropped to one knee and caught him as he launched himself into the air.

"Hey, squirt! You been good for your mom? You eat all your dinosaur pancakes?"

"Yep! And I counted to one hundred! And I learned the T-Rex song! Wanna hear?"

"Only if you sing it LOUD!"

Liam took a deep breath and started singing at the top of his lungs. Andrew sang along, making up the words as he went, making Liam laugh so hard he could barely breathe.

Claire watched them. For the first time since she had stood at that gate, her chest didn’t feel like it was being crushed. She had her brother. She had her son. She had people who would fight for her.

And Mark?

He was sitting in an interrogation room downtown, with no lawyer willing to take his call, no money left to his name, and a mountain of evidence stacking up against him.

But the worst was yet to come for Mark Collins.

Because while he sat in that room, staring at the gray walls, waiting for a lawyer who would never come, Natalie Brooks was in the next room over.

And she was telling the FBI everything.

Every detail.

Every plan.

Every time Mark had said, "Soon. Just a little longer. Then we’ll be together and we’ll never have to worry about money again."

Every time he had looked at Claire across the dinner table and smiled while he thought about the thirty-eight million dollars waiting for him.

And one more thing.

Something even Natalie had been afraid to say out loud.

May you like

Something that would change everything.

Because Mark hadn’t been working alone.
