Chapter 1

I was eight months pregnant when I came home from the grocery store and saw my husband walking through the mall holding another woman’s hand.
For a second, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
Then Ryan leaned toward her and kissed her forehead.
My grocery bags slipped from my hands.
“Ryan?”
He turned around and went completely still.
The woman beside him tightened her grip on his hand.
I walked straight toward them.
“Who is she?”
Ryan stepped in front of her.
“Emily, please don’t do this here.”
That sentence told me everything.
I looked at the woman.
“You knew he was married?”
She didn’t answer.
I noticed they were carrying bags from a baby store.
My stomach twisted.
“What did you two buy?”
Ryan tried taking my arm.
“Let’s go home and talk.”
I pulled away.
The woman suddenly said, “Ryan told me you already knew.”
I stared at her.
“Knew what?”
Ryan snapped, “Vanessa, stop.”
She looked at him, confused.
That was when I slapped her across the face.
People around us stopped walking.
Ryan grabbed my wrist.
“Have you lost your mind?”
I shoved his hand away.
“I’m carrying your child while you’re shopping with your mistress!”
Vanessa held her cheek and stared at Ryan.
“You said she was leaving you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“I’m eight months pregnant.”
Vanessa’s expression suddenly changed.
She looked at my stomach.
Then she looked at the baby-store bags in Ryan’s hands.
“Ryan… you told me the baby wasn’t yours.”
I froze.
Ryan went silent.
I stepped closer to him.
“What exactly have you been telling her?”
Vanessa slowly reached into her purse.
Then she pulled out an ultrasound photo.

My heart stopped when she held it toward Ryan.
“Tell your wife why you were buying baby clothes with me.”
