Chapter 6

The papers were served at 6:47 the next morning.
Right as the children were sitting down to pancakes shaped like dinosaurs.
Two sheriff's deputies.
All business.
No apologies.
They handed me a thick manila envelope.
Then they handed an identical one to Sebastian.
"What is this?" Sebastian demanded.
"Petition for emergency temporary custody," one deputy said.
"Filed at five this morning by Mrs. Eleanor Carter. The hearing is at nine. Judge Morrison's courtroom. You've been ordered to appear."
Then they were gone.
I tore open the envelope.
Started reading.
And I felt the blood drain from my face.
Eleanor wasn't just asking for custody.
She was asking for sole custody.
Immediate.
Permanent.
And she had attached evidence.
Pages and pages of it.
Medical records from five years ago—taken out of context—suggesting I had suffered from postpartum depression so severe I was a danger to myself and others.
Witness statements from former neighbors claiming I left the children alone for hours at a time.
Financial records showing I had struggled to pay rent during the first year of the business.
A psychological evaluation—ordered and paid for by Eleanor's team—declaring me "emotionally unstable" and "unfit to parent."
And the final page...
A sworn affidavit from Olivia Bennett.
Detailing every threat I had supposedly made.
Every "crazy" phone call.
Every act of "unhinged behavior."
It was all lies.
Every single word.
But it looked real.
Official.
Convincing.
"She can't do this," I whispered.
"She can't just... make things up and have them be true."
Sebastian was already on his feet.
Shouting for his lawyers.
"She can and she did," he said, grabbing his jacket.
"Morrison is her judge. She's donated to his last three campaigns. He'll grant her temporary custody without even reading the papers. We have forty minutes to get downtown and stop him. Sarah is meeting us there."
He looked at the children.
Confused.
Scared.
Wondering why the men in uniforms had come to their house.
"Maria," Sebastian called to my housekeeper.
"Keep the kids here. No one comes in. No one goes out. If anyone asks where we are... you don't know. Understand?"
Maria nodded.
She had been through worse with me.
But her face was white.
Sebastian grabbed my hand.
"Come on. We have to move."
---
The courthouse was a zoo.
Cameras lined the steps.
Microphones thrust in our faces as we ran from the car.
Hannah! Did you really blackmail the Carters for five years?
Sebastian! Are you choosing your ex-wife over your fiancée?
Are the children really yours?
We didn't answer.
We just ran.
Up the marble steps.
Through the metal detectors.
Into the elevator.
The doors closed.
And for the first time all morning...
We could breathe.
"I can't do this, Sebastian," I said, sliding down the wall until I was sitting on the floor.
"I can't stand in a courtroom and listen to a woman who stole my children call me an unfit mother. I can't have some judge who's in her pocket take my babies away because she has better lawyers and more money. This isn't justice. This is just... rich people playing games with my life."
Sebastian knelt down beside me.
Took my face in his hands.
"Look at me. Hannah... look at me."
I did.
"I am not going to let her take them. Do you hear me? Not today. Not ever. I will burn every dollar I have to my name before I let that woman within a hundred miles of my children. And if Morrison rules against us... we appeal. And we appeal again. And we keep going until we find a judge who isn't on my mother's payroll. This is not over. Not by a long shot."
The elevator dinged.
Sarah was waiting for us.
Face grim.
Papers in hand.
"It's bad," she said immediately.
"Morrison already granted the temporary order. Signed it ten minutes ago. Eleanor has two social workers and two police officers on their way to the penthouse right now to take physical custody of the children."
The world tilted.
I grabbed the wall to stay upright.
"No..."
"Wait," Sebastian said.
"She can't do that. I'm their father. I'm on the birth certificate—"
"You're not on the birth certificate, Sebastian," Sarah cut him off.
"Hannah listed 'father unknown' five years ago. Legally... you're a stranger. Eleanor used that. She argued that Hannah is an unfit mother and that the only other known biological relative who can provide immediate, stable care is her. As the paternal grandmother. And Morrison bought it. Hook, line, and sinker."
I was already running for the stairs.
"We have to get back there. Before they take them."
Sebastian was right behind me.
Sarah yelling after us about procedures and rules and how we couldn't just "outrun a court order."
We didn't care.
We ran.
Down seven flights of stairs.
Out the back entrance of the courthouse.
Into Sebastian's waiting car.
"Home," Sebastian barked at the driver.
"Now. Drive like the devil himself is chasing you."
---
The penthouse doors were already open when we burst into the lobby.
Two police officers.
Two social workers.
And Eleanor Carter.
Standing in my living room.
Watching as a uniformed officer tried to coax a screaming Sophie into his arms.
Ethan was biting the man's wrist.
Lucas was hiding under the dining room table screaming for Mommy.
Maria was red-faced and crying, trying to block the door.
"Get away from them!" I screamed.
I ran across the room and snatched Sophie from the officer's arms.
Pulled Ethan behind me.
Dove under the table to get Lucas.
Suddenly I was on the floor with all three of them clinging to me.
Sobbing.
Shaking.
Begging the scary men to go away.
"You have no right!" Sebastian roared.
He stepped between us and the officers.
His face a mask of pure fury.
"I am their father! I live here! This is my home! And I will not have my children traumatized like this!"
Eleanor stepped forward.
Calm.
Collected.
Smug.
"The court order says otherwise, Sebastian. Legally... you are nothing to these children. Just a man who happened to donate some DNA five years ago. And until a judge says differently... I have every right to take my grandchildren to a safe, stable home."
She looked at me.
Huddled on the floor with my babies.
And she smiled.
The most evil smile I had ever seen.
"You should have taken the ten million, Hannah. I told you this family doesn't lose."
"Get out," Sebastian said quietly.
His voice was dangerously low.
"Everyone. Now. Before I have my own security throw every last one of you out the window. Including you, Mother."
Eleanor laughed.
"You can't threaten the police, Sebastian. That would be obstruction of justice. And then where would you be? In a cell. And I'd still have the children."
She turned to the lead officer.
"Officer... please do your job. Remove the children. And if Ms. Marks resists... arrest her for interfering with a court order."
The officer stepped forward.
"Ma'am... please. Don't make this harder than it has to be. Just hand over the kids. You can see them in a few days after the next hearing."
I held them tighter.
"I will die before I let you take them."
And I meant it.
At that moment...
I would have fought every single person in that room with my bare hands.
Before the officer could touch me...
Sebastian spoke.
"Wait."
Everyone froze.
He turned to me.
His eyes were wet.
Desperate.
But he nodded slightly.
Almost imperceptibly.
Trust me.
Then he turned back to Eleanor.
"You want them?" he said.
"Fine. Take them. But you will not take them to some estate in the suburbs where I can't see them. They come with me. To the lake house. In Michigan. I'll go with them. You can have your 'temporary custody' on paper, Mother. But I am not leaving my children. Not for one second. If you try to separate us... I will go to every news network in the world and tell them exactly how you obtained that court order. Who you paid. What lies you told. And I will bring this entire family down around your ears. Are we clear?"
Eleanor hesitated.
She had wanted the children.
But she hadn't counted on Sebastian going with them.
Finally, she nodded.
"Fine. The lake house. But my security team goes with you. And Hannah... you are not to come within five hundred feet of any of them. Not until the judge says so. Is that also clear?"
I looked at Sebastian.
He nodded again.
Just barely.
I kissed each of my children.
One by one.
Told them I loved them.
That Daddy would take care of them.
That Mommy would come for them soon.
And then I let them go.
I watched as Sebastian carried them out.
Each of them screaming my name.
Reaching for me.
And I stood there.
In the middle of my empty living room.
And I let Eleanor Carter see me break.
Because I knew something she didn't.
May you like
Sebastian had a plan.
And the recording was about to drop.
