Chapter 7

The next two weeks were a blur.

The drip of information to the press continued, exactly as Marcus had planned. Each day brought a new revelation, a new scandal, a new reason for the public to turn against Grant.

The social media storm was brutal. People who had once praised Grant as a visionary now called him a monster. The hashtag #HollowayScandal trended for days. Vanessa's Instagram, once filled with photos of fancy parties and expensive gifts, was flooded with angry comments. She deleted her account within forty-eight hours.

Meridian Capital, meanwhile, was thriving.

The board voted unanimously to name me CEO. The investors, who'd always known who really ran the company, rallied around me. The stock price, which had dipped briefly when the scandal first broke, quickly recovered and then soared to new heights.

I threw myself into work. Long days. Late nights. It was easier than thinking. Easier than remembering.

Claire moved into the Boston condo with me, just as she'd promised. She cooked terrible pasta and forced me to watch reality TV and made me laugh when I felt like crying. She was my rock.

One evening, as we sat on the couch eating takeout, Claire put down her fork and looked at me seriously.

"When was the last time you went on a date?"

I blinked. "A date? Claire, I'm in the middle of a divorce. And a fraud investigation. And a company to run. I don't have time for dates."

"Everyone has time for dates," Claire said. "Or at least for getting laid. You haven't been with anyone but Grant for ten years. Don't you think it's time? You're young. You're beautiful. You're the CEO of a billion-dollar company. You could have anyone you want."

"I don't want anyone," I said, looking away. "I don't trust anyone."

"That's the trauma talking," Claire said gently. "Not you. The real you loves love. The real you wants to be with someone who makes you laugh, who listens to you, who appreciates you for who you are, not for what you can give them. Grant took that from you. But you can take it back."

I said nothing. She was right, of course. But the thought of letting someone in again, of being vulnerable again, made my chest feel tight.

"Just think about it," Claire said. "That's all I ask."

The next day, Marcus called with news.

"The DA is ready to move forward," he said. "They're filing criminal charges against Grant. Embezzlement. Fraud. Conspiracy. And the domestic assault. They're also filing charges against Vanessa as an accomplice. She knew about the embezzlement. She benefited from it. She's going down too."

"When?"

"Arrest warrants will be issued tomorrow morning," Marcus said. "They'll pick them up at the house. I wanted you to hear it from me first."

I closed my eyes.

It was really happening. The man I'd loved was going to jail. The woman who'd been my sister in all but blood was going to jail too.

I should have felt triumphant. I should have felt vindicated.

Instead, I felt hollow.

"Vivian?" Marcus said, his voice soft. "You okay?"

"I'm fine," I said. "It just... it feels like the end of something."

"It is the end," Marcus said. "Of the bad part. The rest of your life starts tomorrow."

I hung up and walked to the window. The sun was setting over the Charles River, painting the water in shades of orange and purple.

The rest of my life.

It sounded big. Scary. Exciting.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I lay in bed, thinking about the last ten years. The good parts and the bad. The way Grant used to make me coffee in the morning, just how I liked it. The way he'd hold my hand at parties, so proud to be seen with me. The way he'd looked at me in the courtroom, full of hatred.

I thought about Vanessa too. The girl I'd met at Yale, who'd shared my dorm room and my dreams and my clothes. The girl who'd been my maid of honor, who'd held my bouquet and cried happy tears as I walked down the aisle.

How had it all gone so wrong?

At 3 AM, I got out of bed and went to my desk. I pulled out a notebook and a pen and started writing.

I didn't know what I was writing at first. Just words. Feelings. Memories. But as the words flowed, something shifted. The pain wasn't so sharp. The anger wasn't so hot.

I was writing my way through it.

By the time the sun came up, I'd filled ten pages.

I closed the notebook and set it aside.

Today was the day Grant and Vanessa got arrested.

Today was the day the old life ended.

May you like

And today was the day the new one began.

I took a shower, put on a beautiful blue dress, and went to work.
