Chapter 7

We held a press conference three days later.
Marcus handled the logistics.
The room was packed.
Reporters. Cameras. Microphones.
The story had already started to leak.
Billionaire Ethan Sterling Accused of Domestic Abuse.
Mysterious Father-in-Law Emerges to Fight Back.
Nobody knew yet that the “mysterious father-in-law” was the founder of Carter Industries.
That was about to change.
Lily sat beside me on the stage.
She was nervous.
I could see her hands trembling in her lap.
But she was also determined.
Sarah stood at the back of the room, watching everything.
Marcus stood off to the side, ready to step in if things got out of hand.
I stood up and walked to the podium.
The room went quiet.
“Good morning. My name is James Carter. For those who don’t know me, I am the founder of Carter Industries. And I am Lily Carter’s father.”
A murmur rippled through the room.
Cameras flashed.
Reporters scribbled furiously.
They knew the name.
Everyone knew the name.
Carter Industries.
The company that had taken down corrupt politicians and criminal organizations. The company that valued truth and justice over profit.
And I was its founder.
Ethan’s world had just gotten a lot smaller.
“I’m here today because my daughter has been the victim of unspeakable abuse at the hands of her husband, Ethan Sterling. For nearly three years, she has lived in fear. She has been beaten. Threatened. Belittled. And she was made to feel that no one would believe her because of who her husband is.”
I paused.
Let the words sink in.
“Ethan Sterling believes that his money and his power make him untouchable. He believes he can hurt people and get away with it. He has tried to buy my silence. He has tried to threaten my daughter. He has lied about her character in an attempt to save himself.”
I gestured to the table beside me.
Stacks of documents.
“On this table, you will find evidence. Medical records. Witness statements. Testimony from Ethan’s first wife, Rebecca, who suffered the same abuse at his hands ten years ago. Financial records proving Ethan Sterling has built his empire on theft and corruption. None of this is made up. None of this is a lie.”
I looked directly into the nearest camera.
“Ethan Sterling is not the genius philanthropist he pretends to be. He is a bully. A thief. And an abuser. And today, his reign of terror ends. We are filing criminal charges. We are filing civil suits. We are going to expose every single thing he has ever done. And he is going to be held accountable.”
I stepped back from the podium.
“Now my daughter would like to say a few words.”
The room was silent as Lily stood up and walked to the microphone.
She took a deep breath.
And for a moment, I was afraid she wouldn’t be able to do it.
Then she looked out at the room.
And she spoke.
“My name is Lily Carter. And I am not crazy. I am not greedy. I am a woman who fell in love with the wrong man. A man who told me he loved me while he was hurting me. A man who made me feel small and worthless and alone.”
Her voice shook but didn’t break.
“I stayed because I was afraid. I stayed because I thought no one would believe me. I stayed because I thought I had nowhere else to go. But I was wrong. I have my father. I have people who care about me. And I have the truth.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“And to any other woman who is going through what I went through—you are not alone. You are not crazy. And you do not have to stay. There are people who will help you. There is a way out.”
She stepped back.
The room erupted.
Reporters shouted questions.
Cameras flashed.
Marcus stepped forward to handle the Q&A.
I took Lily’s hand and led her off the stage.
She leaned against me in the hallway.
“Did I do okay?”
I kissed the top of her head.
“You did amazing. So brave.”
Sarah met us at the exit.
“We need to go. Now. The press is going to swarm. And Ethan’s people are already here. I saw them in the parking lot.”
We left through a back entrance.
The drive back to the safe house was quiet.
Lily fell asleep in the passenger seat.
Exhausted.
Relieved.
I checked my phone.
The story was everywhere.
James Carter, Founder of Carter Industries, Exposes Son-in-Law Ethan Sterling.
Billionaire’s Empire Crumbling Amid Abuse Allegations.
Ethan Sterling’s world was burning.
And I had lit the match.
My phone buzzed.
A text from an unknown number.
This isn’t over.
I smiled.
No.
May you like
It wasn’t over.
But it was close.
