Chapter 6

The second court date arrived faster than I expected.

I was now eight and a half months pregnant. My belly was so large I could barely see my feet. My back ached constantly. The baby kicked and turned inside me, an endless reminder of the life I was about to bring into the world.

But I was ready.

Margaret had reviewed the documents Olivia had given me. She said they were devastating—proof of Daniel's intent, proof of additional hidden assets, proof of his plan to frame Olivia.

"With this," Margaret had said, "we don't just win. We bury him."

The courtroom was even more crowded this time. Word had gotten out about the previous hearing. Reporters filled the back row. Curious onlookers packed the gallery. Everyone wanted to see the millionaire liar get what he deserved.

Daniel sat alone at his table. His new lawyer, a sharp-looking woman named Victoria Reyes, sat beside him, speaking in low, urgent tones. Daniel looked like he hadn't slept in days.

Olivia was not in the courtroom. But her presence was felt in the documents Margaret held.

Judge Alvarez entered. We all stood.

"Be seated."

She looked at the papers in front of her, then up at Daniel. Her expression was unreadable.

"We are here today to continue proceedings in Carter versus Carter. Since our last hearing, there have been... additional developments. Mrs. Carter's counsel has submitted new evidence. Mr. Carter's counsel has also submitted filings, including a request for partial unfreezing of assets and a request for supervised visitation with the unborn child after birth."

She looked at Margaret.

"Ms. Chen, you may present your new evidence."

Margaret stood up. She was calm, confident, completely in control.

"Thank you, Your Honor. Since our last hearing, we have obtained additional evidence proving the extent of Mr. Carter's deception. This evidence comes from an unlikely source—Ms. Olivia Bennett, the woman with whom Mr. Carter was having an affair."

A murmur went through the courtroom.

Daniel's head snapped up. His eyes were wide with fear.

"Ms. Bennett has provided us with emails, text messages, and financial records," Margaret continued. "These documents prove that Mr. Carter was planning to divorce his wife and drain their marital accounts as early as eighteen months ago—months before Mrs. Carter discovered the affair."

She handed a new stack of papers to the bailiff.

"They also prove that Mr. Carter was hiding assets in accounts not previously disclosed—accounts held in the names of shell companies. The total value of these accounts is approximately three and a half million dollars."

The murmurs grew louder.

"Furthermore," Margaret said, her voice rising slightly, "these documents show that Mr. Carter planned to frame Ms. Bennett for the unauthorized transfers if the fraud was ever discovered. He intended to walk away with all the money while Ms. Bennett took the blame."

Daniel shot to his feet. "That's not true! She's lying! She's making this up to get revenge!"

"Sit down, Mr. Carter," Judge Alvarez said coldly.

"But Your Honor—"

"Sit. Down."

Daniel collapsed back into his chair, trembling.

Margaret waited for silence before continuing.

"Your Honor, this evidence paints a clear picture. Mr. Carter is not just a man who made a mistake. He is a man who carefully, methodically planned to destroy his wife financially and emotionally while carrying on multiple affairs and fathering a child with another woman."

She paused, letting the words sink in.

"And he did all of this while his wife was pregnant with his child."

Judge Alvarez read through the new documents. As she read, her face grew darker and darker. When she finished, she closed the folder and looked at Daniel with such fury I was surprised he didn't catch fire.

"Mr. Carter," she said, her voice like ice. "Do you have any explanation for these documents?"

Daniel's lawyer stood up. "Your Honor, these documents could be altered. Ms. Bennett has motive to fabricate evidence against my client—their relationship ended badly, and she is bitter—"

"Spare me," Judge Alvarez cut her off. "I've seen enough. The pattern is consistent. The details match what we already know. These documents are authentic."

She leaned forward, her eyes boring into Daniel.

"Mr. Carter, I have been a judge for twenty-two years. I have seen liars. I have seen cheats. I have seen men who abandon their families. But rarely have I seen someone so cold, so calculating, and so completely lacking in remorse."

She picked up her pen and began writing.

"I am issuing the following final orders on the matters before me today."

The courtroom went dead silent.

"First, the divorce is granted. Effective immediately. The marriage between Emma Carter and Daniel Carter is dissolved."

I closed my eyes for a second. It was really over.

"Second, due to Mr. Carter's fraudulent conduct and his attempt to hide marital assets, the property division is awarded 90% to Mrs. Carter and 10% to Mr. Carter. All hidden assets are to be turned over to Mrs. Carter within thirty days."

Daniel made a strangled sound.

"Third, permanent spousal support is set at ten thousand dollars per month for a period of five years, or until Mrs. Carter remarries, whichever comes first. Additionally, Mr. Carter will pay all of Mrs. Carter's legal fees in this matter."

"Fourth, regarding custody of the unborn child: Mrs. Carter is awarded sole legal and physical custody. Mr. Carter will have no visitation rights for a minimum of six months after the child's birth, at which point he may petition the court for supervised visitation only if he can prove he has made meaningful efforts to address his issues and establish a relationship with his other child in Detroit."

"Fifth, child support is set at three thousand dollars per month, to begin the day the child is born. Mr. Carter will also maintain full health insurance for the child until age twenty-six."

"Sixth, regarding the child in Detroit: I am ordering immediate paternity testing. If Mr. Carter is confirmed as the father, he will pay all back child support plus interest, current child support of two thousand five hundred dollars per month, and all reasonable medical and educational expenses."

Judge Alvarez paused, taking a deep breath.

"And finally, I am referring the entirety of the financial fraud evidence to the FBI and the IRS for criminal investigation. Mr. Carter, you may very well be facing criminal charges in addition to everything else."

She put down her pen.

"These orders are final and binding. If you fail to comply with any of them, you will be held in contempt of court and face significant fines and possible jail time."

She looked at me, and her expression softened.

"Mrs. Carter, I wish you and your child nothing but the best. You have shown tremendous strength and dignity throughout these proceedings. You deserve a fresh start."

She picked up her gavel.

"This court is adjourned."

The gavel slammed down.

It was really over.

People were talking. Reporters were rushing toward me. My mother was crying. Margaret was smiling.

But I couldn't hear any of it.

May you like

I sat there, my hands on my belly, feeling the baby kick.

I was free.
