Chapter 5

I found out where Daniel was staying the next day.

A cheap Budget Inn on the edge of town. The kind of place where the sheets smell like cigarettes and regret, where people pay by the hour, where the cops are called at least once a night.

Room 117.

I parked my car across the street, took a deep breath, and walked over.

The carpet in the hallway was sticky. The walls were covered in stains that looked suspiciously like old blood. A guy in a wifebeater stood by the vending machine, staring at me like he was wondering how much my purse was worth.

I banged on the door of 117.

No answer.

I banged louder. “Daniel! I know you’re in there! Open up, or I call the front desk and tell them you’re doing drugs in there!”

The lock clicked.

The door opened three inches.

Sarah stood there. Wearing Daniel’s old Ohio State hoodie, the one with the hole in the elbow I’d tried to mend a hundred times. Her blonde hair was messy. She had dark circles under her eyes.

She stared at me, wide-eyed. “You’re… you’re Daniel’s wife.”

“Ex-wife, soon,” I said, pushing the door open and stepping inside.

The room was a mess. Empty beer cans on the nightstand. Pizza boxes on the floor. A pile of dirty clothes in the corner. Daniel sat on the edge of the bed, holding a half-empty can of beer, his face as white as a sheet.

“What are you doing here?” he whispered.

I threw Lila’s three photos onto the bed. They landed face up, right between his feet.

“Two weeks,” I said. “Two weeks before you hit me. You were with her. While I was at home, cooking your dinner, putting up with your mom’s crap, grieving our baby alone… you were fucking your 24-year-old receptionist.”

Sarah gasped. “Grieving your baby? What baby?”

Daniel jumped up. “Sarah, don’t listen to her. She’s lying. She’s crazy—”

“I had a miscarriage two years ago,” I said, looking straight at her. “I was ten weeks pregnant. I didn’t tell him because I was scared he’d leave me. Turns out I was right to be scared. He was already planning to leave anyway. Weren’t you, Daniel?”

He didn’t answer. He just stared at the floor.

Sarah turned to him, her voice shaking. “You told me you were separated. You said you’d been sleeping on the couch for six months. You said she was abusive, that she hit you, that she was keeping you prisoner in the house. You said you were getting a divorce any day now.”

Daniel ran a hand through his hair. “Sarah, baby, listen—”

“Don’t you baby me!” She slapped him. Hard. The sound echoed off the cinder block walls. “You lied to me! For six months! I thought we were in love! I thought we were going to move in together! And you’re just a married loser who lives in a motel room and hits women!”

Before Daniel could answer, the door flew open.

Gloria stood there. Wearing the same hot pink pantsuit, now with a big coffee stain down the front. Behind her were two of her friends from church—Marge and Linda, both in their sixties, both holding Bibles like they were weapons.

Gloria’s eyes locked on Sarah.

Then she saw the hoodie.

“YOU!” she screamed, pointing a finger at Sarah’s chest. “YOU LITTLE HOME-WRECKING SLUT! YOU’RE THE REASON MY SON’S MARRIAGE FELL APART! YOU SEDUCED HIM! YOU PUT A SPELL ON HIM!”

She lunged.

It happened so fast I barely saw it. Gloria grabbed Sarah by the hair, yanking her head back, and slapped her across the face so hard Sarah’s lip split open, blood running down her chin.

Sarah screamed, fighting back. She grabbed Gloria’s hair, pulling out clumps of bleached blonde extensions, and kneed her in the stomach. They fell onto the floor, rolling around, screaming, scratching, pulling each other’s clothes. Marge and Linda stood by the door, cheering Gloria on, yelling “Kick her ass, Gloria! Teach that little whore a lesson!”

Daniel tried to pull them apart. “Mom! Stop! Sarah, let go of her hair—”

Gloria swung her big leather purse at Sarah, missed, and hit Daniel square in the face. He fell backward onto the bed, his nose bleeding.

By this time, half the motel was standing in the doorway. A guy in swim trunks held up his phone, recording. A group of kids from the pool were yelling “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

I leaned against the doorframe, watching.

I should have felt bad. I should have tried to stop it.

But I didn’t.

I watched Gloria’s pantsuit rip up the back. I watched Sarah’s nose ring get pulled out and skitter across the floor. I watched Daniel get hit twice more by flying elbows, trying to play peacemaker.

And then I turned around and walked out.

I got in my car, turned the key, and pulled out of the parking lot. I turned on the radio, rolled down the windows, and let the wind blow through my hair.

By the time I got home, the video was already on the local HOA Facebook group.

I watched the first ten seconds. Gloria screaming “slut!” Sarah pulling her hair. Daniel getting hit in the face with the purse.

I closed the video, put my phone down, and laughed.

For the first time in six years, I laughed so hard my sides hurt.
