Chapter 1

I Returned Home Early to Surprise My Son on His First Birthday—But Instead, I Discovered My Mother Hosting an Extravagant Banquet for Almost Twenty Relatives While My Drained Wife Was Scrubbing Endless Piles of Dishes With Our Feverish Baby in Her Arms. “I’m the One in Charge of This Family,” My Mother Bragged. I Silently Put Down the Birthday Cake, Opened a Secret Folder on My Phone, and Within Minutes the Party Became the Start of a Police Investigation.
“I’m the one who makes the choices in this home. Your wife’s only responsibility is to give birth and clean up after everybody.”
I heard my mother speaking before I had even stepped through the front entrance.
She laughed while passing bottles of premium bourbon to nearly twenty relatives gathered in the backyard of my house outside Dallas.
Nobody realized I had arrived home early.
My name is Ethan Carter.
I work as a civil engineer, and that Friday was meant to be my son Mason’s first birthday.
I had planned to finish work ahead of schedule so I could surprise my wife, Olivia.
Inside my car were a birthday cake, a small silver pendant engraved with the letter M, and the blue maternity dress she had been admiring online for several weeks but would not purchase because she kept saying we needed to save the money.
Every month, I sent five thousand dollars to my mother, Linda Carter.
After Mason was born, she persuaded me to allow her to move into our home, promising she would handle the household, purchase groceries, cover the bills, and support Olivia while I spent weeks away supervising construction projects throughout Texas.
Each time I phoned home, Olivia always told me that everything was okay.
I trusted her.
When I turned onto our street, I saw expensive SUVs and pickup trucks lined along both sides of the road.
Music was playing loudly enough to shake the windows.
The backyard looked less like a first birthday celebration and more like a luxurious catered reception.
Long tables were covered with prime rib, lobster tails, smoked barbecue, seafood trays, gourmet desserts, and boxes of costly alcohol.
My mother stood proudly in the middle of everything, dressed in a designer outfit I had never seen her wear before.
Gold bracelets glittered around both of her wrists.
She announced proudly to anyone close enough to hear,
“My son makes more money than he can possibly spend.”
“He gives me everything I require to keep this family functioning.”
One of my aunts looked around the yard.
“Where is Olivia?”
“She’s in the kitchen,” my mother replied without bothering to turn.
“I made her prepare every dish here.”
“She behaves as though having a baby has made her delicate.”
“If she plans to survive on my son’s income...”
“She needs to earn her position.”
A few relatives laughed.
Everyone else simply continued eating.
Not a single person spoke against her.
I went around the side of the house and slipped inside through the rear door.
The first thing I noticed was the harsh odor of bleach.
Then I saw my wife.
Olivia was sitting on a low plastic stool, surrounded by enormous stacks of oily pans and filthy dishes.
She held Mason against her shoulder with one arm.
His tiny cheeks were flushed deep red.
His breathing sounded irregular.
Heat poured from his little body.
He obviously had a fever.
With her free hand, she scrubbed a massive roasting tray.
Half of a dry dinner roll rested between her lips.
It appeared to be the only food she had been able to eat all day.
Her T-shirt was soaked and stuck to her skin.
Heavy shadows circled her eyes.
Her wrists appeared frighteningly thin.
The instant she saw me...
The bread dropped from between her lips.
“Ethan…”
She looked as though she might break down.
“Your mother said I wasn’t permitted to take a break.”
“She said I still need to prepare coffee for everybody.”
I stared at my son.
Then I looked at my wife.
Then I listened to the laughter drifting in from the backyard.
Without speaking a single word...
I carefully lowered the birthday cake onto the kitchen floor.
Slipped my hand into my pocket.
Opened a concealed folder on my phone.

And within minutes...
The birthday party my mother thought she completely controlled was about to become the focus of a police investigation.
