Chapter 9

The trial lasted two weeks.
It was brutal.
Victoria's team threw everything they had at me.
Every mistake I had ever made. Every bad decision. Every time I had chosen work over my family.
They paraded witness after witness.
Each one more convincing than the last.
But our case was stronger.
The staff testified. One by one. Told the court everything they had seen. Everything they had been too scared to say before.
The doctor testified. Walked the jury through every injury. Every bruise. Every broken bone. Explained in calm, clinical terms exactly what had been done to my children.
The therapist testified. About the nightmares. The flinching. The hyper-vigilance. The way three small children had learned to survive in a war zone called home.
James testified last.
He brought the original photographs. The negatives. The metadata proving when they were taken.
And then...
Marcus entered Victoria's journals into evidence.
Page after page was read aloud to the jury.
Her own words.
I watched the jury as they listened.
One by one...
they turned to look at Victoria.
Disgust. Horror. Anger.
The mask finally slipped.
Halfway through the reading, Victoria stood up. Screamed. Threw her water glass across the courtroom.
"LIARS!" she shrieked. "All of you! They're my children! I can do whatever I want with them! They're MINE!"
Her lawyer tried to pull her down. She fought him. Scratched at him.
The judge banged her gavel. Over and over.
"Order! ORDER IN THE COURT!"
It took three bailiffs to get Victoria under control.
She was removed from the courtroom. Screaming. Cursing. Threatening everyone.
The perfect wife. The perfect mother.
Gone.
Revealed for what she really was.
The jury deliberated for six hours.
When they came back...
the forewoman stood up.
Her voice was clear. Steady.
"We, the jury, find the defendant, Victoria Marie Harrington, guilty on three counts of felony child abuse. Three counts of unlawful imprisonment. One count of child endangerment."
She paused.
"We award full permanent legal and physical custody of the three minor children to Nathan James Harrington. The defendant is to have no contact of any kind with the children—direct or indirect—until they reach the age of eighteen. No letters. No gifts. No third-party messages. Nothing."
The judge banged her gavel one final time.
"So ordered."
It was over.
Victoria was taken into custody immediately. Handcuffed. Led out of the courtroom.
She didn't look at me. Didn't look at the children.
Her face was blank. Empty.
The monster was finally gone.
I turned to my children.
They were sitting in the front row. Flanked by their therapist and my mother.
They didn't understand all the legal words.
But they understood the most important thing.
"It's over," I said. I knelt in front of them. "She can never hurt you again. Ever."
Leo threw his arms around me.
Emma cried happy tears.
Aiden yelled so loud the whole courtroom laughed.
"We're free, Daddy! We're FREE!"
Outside, the cameras were waiting.
Hundreds of them.
But this time...
the headlines were different.
VICTORIA HARRINGTON GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS.
MONSTER UNMASKED.
NATHAN HARRINGTON: A FATHER WHO FOUGHT AND WON.
I didn't make a statement.
I just held my children close.

Walked through the crowd.
And took them home.
