Chapter 1

I flew home from the UAE expecting to hold my newborn son for the first time—only to walk into my pregnant wife’s funeral. Then her sister slipped me a hospital bracelet and whispered, “Your baby isn’t dead.”
I had been working on a construction project in Abu Dhabi for four months.
My wife, Emily, was eight months pregnant when I left.
We video-called every night.
Three days before my flight home to Houston, Emily suddenly stopped answering.
My mother, Diane, finally called me.
“There were complications,” she said.
“What happened?”
Her voice broke.
“Emily and the baby are gone.”
I don’t remember hanging up.
I booked the first flight home.
But nobody met me at the airport.
When I reached our church, cars filled the parking lot.
That was when I realized the funeral was already happening.
I ran inside wearing the same clothes I had flown in.
Emily’s photograph stood beside a closed casket.
My mother rushed toward me.
“Daniel, you shouldn’t see her like this.”
I pushed past her.
“Where’s my son?”
Nobody answered.
My father lowered his eyes.
“The baby didn’t survive.”
I walked toward the casket.
Then Emily’s younger sister, Hannah, grabbed my arm.
“Don’t open it.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
She looked toward my mother.
Diane was watching us.
Hannah pulled me into an empty hallway.
Her hands were shaking.
“Emily called me from the hospital before she died.”
My knees nearly gave out.
“What did she say?”
“She said someone was trying to take the baby.”
I thought I had misheard her.
“What baby? Mom said he died.”
Hannah reached into her purse.
She handed me a tiny hospital bracelet.
BABY BOY MILLER.
Underneath was my last name and a birth time from two days earlier.
“He was born alive,” Hannah whispered.
I stared at the bracelet.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Then she handed me Emily’s phone.
“There’s one video you need to watch.”
I pressed play.
Emily was lying in a hospital bed, terrified and whispering into the camera.
“If Daniel sees this, our son is alive.”
My breath stopped.
Then someone entered Emily’s room behind her.
The camera shook.

Emily whispered one last sentence before the recording ended.
“His mother is here.”
