Chapter 1

"I returned from a mission and went straight to the ICU; my wife had been be@ten so badly I could barely recognize her. The doctor whispered, “She has 31 fractures.” Outside, her father and her seven brothers were smiling. I simply took the medical report, looked at the detective, and realized that family was hiding something far worse.
“Thirty-one fractures, Mr. Walker... and your wife was expecting.”
Ethan Walker felt the ground shift beneath him at Austin Memorial Hospital.
But the sensation wasn't physical.
It was a psychic fracture—the deafening, suffocating silence of a life being torn apart in an instant.
He had just returned from a long security assignment on the Oregon coast, a job so classified he couldn't even whisper its nature to Claire. Every long, cold night, the image of her waiting in their Westlake home was his only anchor: the soft smile, the open door, the whispered greeting of a wife awaiting her husband.
But when he finally stepped into their home, the anchor snapped.
The house was cold.
The silence was total.
And underneath the heavy, clinical scent of a deep bleach scrub, he detected the unmistakable, metallic tang of bl00d.
The hospital had reached out just as his sanity began to fray.
Now, he stood in the ICU looking at a stranger with his wife’s name on her wrist. The swelling on her face was so severe he had to confirm her identity through her ID band.
His wife.
His anchor.
The doctor’s voice was barely a breath.
“These were precise, targeted blows. This wasn't a random occurrence; it wasn't a robbery gone wrong.”
Ethan turned his gaze toward the hall.
There stood the Blackwood men.
Victor Blackwood, the patriarch, flanked by his seven sons.
They looked like an impenetrable phalanx, expensive and composed.
They weren't mourning.
They weren't panicked.
One was checking his watch, a smirk playing on his lips.
The Blackwood name was synonymous with influence in Austin, Texas—oil, real estate, and a political reach that touched everyone.
Victor always referred to his sons as “the pack.”
Claire had been the only one who refused to be part of the hunt.
“Mr. Walker,” the detective murmured, clearly looking for a way out, “right now, we are filing this as a home invasion.”
Ethan didn't blink. He stared down the officer.
“My wife is a highly skilled fighter. She trains for combat. If an intruder had entered our home, they wouldn't have walked away unscathed.”
He held Claire’s hand.
Her nails were untouched.
“She didn't fight back because she was either pinned down, or because she knew exactly who was hurting her.”
The detective’s glance toward Victor was all the confirmation Ethan needed.
The investigation wasn't stalled by a lack of clues.
It was stalled by a lack of courage.
Victor approached, his demeanor dismissive.
“Ethan, stand down. You’re always away; we’re the ones who handle family matters.”
“Stay away from her.”
Marcus, the eldest, stepped into his space.
“Careful, soldier. This is a family matter.”
Ethan leaned into him until the smugness vanished from Marcus's face.
“Exactly,” Ethan growled.
“And I am going to uncover every single person who turned my wife into a victim.”
His gaze locked onto Eli, the youngest brother.
The coffee cup in Eli’s hand rattled, spilling dark liquid across the pristine hospital floor.
Ethan didn't lose his temper.
He didn't make a scene.
He simply promised,
“I don't need anyone's consent to defend my wife.”
He marched away, leaving the Blackwood men in the dark, unaware that the man they viewed as nothing more than a ‘soldier’ had just launched a relentless campaign of justice.
