Chapter 5

The police showed up twenty minutes later.

Two uniformed officers, their faces serious.

Rafael was with them, his jaw already bruising, a perfect picture of the innocent victim.

“Mr. Hale?” one of the officers said.

“I’m Officer Ruiz. We have a report of an assault. Mr. Torres says you attacked him without provocation.”

I held up my hands.

“He was in my house uninvited. He threatened me. Threatened my daughter.”

Rafael shook his head sadly.

“See? He’s irrational. Paranoid. He’s been working too hard. He’s been taking it out on everyone around him. Especially Isabella.”

The officers exchanged a look.

“Is Isabella here?” Officer Ruiz asked.

My blood ran cold.

“She’s here. With her nanny.”

“We need to speak to her.”

“Absolutely not. She’s eight years old. She’s been through enough.”

“Mr. Hale, if you refuse, we’ll have to get a social worker involved. And a judge.”

I clenched my jaw.

“Fine. But I’m in the room the whole time.”

Maria brought Isabella down a minute later.

She was in her unicorn pajamas, her hair messy, her eyes wide with fear when she saw the police.

“Dad?” she whispered, running to me.

I knelt and hugged her tight.

“It’s okay, baby. These men just need to ask you a few questions. That’s all.”

I sat her on the couch, kneeling in front of her.

Officer Ruiz crouched down to her level, his voice gentle.

“Hi, Isabella. I’m Officer Ruiz. I just want to ask you a few questions about your dad. Is that okay?”

Isabella nodded, her small hand clutching mine.

“Has your dad ever hurt you?”

Isabella’s eyes went huge.

She looked at Rafael.

He was standing in the corner, his arms crossed, staring at her.

A silent threat.

Isabella swallowed hard.

Then she shook her head.

“No. Never.”

“Has he ever yelled at you? Scared you?”

Another glance at Rafael.

“Only when I’m bad.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Rafael smiled.

Officer Ruiz sighed, standing up.

He pulled me aside.

“Mr. Hale, I’m going to be honest with you. Mr. Torres has already filed a formal complaint. We have to take this seriously. You’re under arrest for assault. You’ll be booked, processed, and released on bail tomorrow morning.”

My heart stopped.

“Arrest? You can’t be serious. He broke into my house!”

“We have two witnesses, Mr. Hale. Mr. Torres and his wife, Beatriz. They both say you attacked him unprovoked. Your daughter just confirmed you have a temper. What do you expect us to do?”

He held out the handcuffs.

“Turn around, please.”

I looked at Isabella.

She was crying now, silent tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Dad?”

I knelt one last time, hugging her as tight as I could.

“I’m okay, baby. I’ll be home tomorrow. I promise. You stay with Maria. She’ll take care of you.”

The officers pulled me away.

They cuffed me.

Led me out the door.

I looked back one last time.

Rafael was standing by the couch, smiling down at Isabella.

She was huddled next to Maria, her face buried in the older woman’s shoulder.

I’d failed her again.

I spent the night in a jail cell in downtown Marbella.

It was cold.

Dirty.

I lay on the hard bunk, staring at the ceiling, replaying every mistake I’d made.

I’d come home early.

I’d seen the abuse.

But I’d reacted too fast.

I’d let my anger get the better of me.

And now Rafael and Beatriz were winning.

Carlos bailed me out at nine the next morning.

He was waiting for me outside the jail, his face grim.

“It’s worse than we thought,” he said, handing me a coffee.

“Rafael called social services last night. They’re sending a team to the villa today to evaluate Isabella. If they think there’s any risk, they’ll take her into protective custody.”

I got into his car, my hands shaking.

“Beatriz is going to be there, isn’t she?”

“Of course she is. She’s already filed an emergency custody petition. She’s saying you’re violent, unstable, an unfit father. She has sworn statements from three ‘former staff’ saying they saw you hit Isabella. All fake, of course. But convincing.”

Carlos pulled out onto the road.

“We have one shot. The social worker assigned to the case is a woman named Carmen Diaz. She’s good. Fair. But she’s also tough. If Isabella is too scared to talk, if she doesn’t tell the truth about Beatriz and Rafael, we lose.”

We pulled up to the villa ten minutes later.

Two cars were parked in the driveway.

A social services van.

And Beatriz’s SUV.

I ran inside.

The living room was full of people.

Maria, holding Isabella tight.

Beatriz, sitting on the couch, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue, playing the grieving wife.

Rafael, standing behind her, his arm around her shoulders.

And a woman in a gray blazer, her notebook open, her face unreadable.

Carmen Diaz.

“Ethan,” Beatriz said, standing up, her voice trembling with fake emotion.

“Thank God you’re here. We were so worried about you. The police said you attacked Rafael… I just can’t believe it. You’ve been so stressed lately. So angry.”

She turned to Carmen.

“Ms. Diaz, you see? This is what I mean. He’s not himself. He’s been working eighteen-hour days for months. He drinks too much. He snaps at the smallest things. I’m just so scared for Isabella.”

Carmen looked at me.

Her eyes were sharp.

Observant.

“Mr. Hale,” she said.

“I’m Carmen Diaz, with Child and Family Services. I’m here to conduct a wellness check on your daughter, and to evaluate the living situation. Given the assault charge last night, and the statements from Mrs. Hale and Mr. Torres, I’m sure you understand this is necessary.”

I nodded.

“I do. But everything they’re saying is a lie. Beatriz has been abusing Isabella for months. Rafael is her accomplice. They’re trying to take my daughter so they can steal my company.”

Carmen raised an eyebrow.

“That’s a very serious accusation.”

“I have proof. Texts between them. Bank records showing they’ve stolen millions from me.”

I pulled the burner phone out of my pocket.

“All of it is right here.”

Rafael laughed.

“Obvious fake. He made all of that up after he found out we were going to report him for abuse.”

Carmen held up a hand.

“Enough. I’ll look at the evidence. But first, I need to speak to Isabella. Alone.”

“Absolutely not,” I said.

“Mr. Hale, if you refuse, I will have no choice but to remove Isabella from this home immediately,” Carmen said firmly.

“Alone. Now.”

I looked at Isabella.

She nodded at me, small and brave.

“It’s okay, Dad.”

Maria led her into the kitchen.

Carmen followed.

The door closed behind them.

We waited.

An hour passed.

Two.

Beatriz checked her phone every two minutes, her leg bouncing.

Rafael stood by the window, his face impassive.

I paced the living room, my heart hammering.

Finally, the kitchen door opened.

Isabella came out first.

Her eyes were red.

She ran straight to me, throwing her arms around my waist.

Carmen followed, her notebook closed, her face still unreadable.

She looked at Beatriz.

Then at Rafael.

Then at me.

“Mrs. Hale,” she said.

“Mr. Torres. I’m going to ask you to leave the premises immediately.”

Beatriz’s mouth fell open.

“What? Why?”

“Isabella has made very serious, very detailed allegations against both of you. Physical abuse. Emotional abuse. Neglect. Conspiracy to kidnap and extort. All of which match the evidence Mr. Hale provided.”

She held up the burner phone.

“I’ve already contacted the police. They’re on their way to arrest both of you.”

Rafael’s face went white.

Beatriz started screaming.

“She’s lying! That little brat is lying! You can’t believe her!”

Two police officers walked through the door at that exact moment.

They walked straight to Rafael and Beatriz, cuffs in hand.

“Rafael Torres, Beatriz Hale, you’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, child abuse, and perjury.”

They led them out, screaming and fighting.

Carmen turned to me.

“Isabella is one of the bravest little girls I’ve ever met,” she said softly.

“She told me everything. Every detail. She said she wasn’t scared anymore because her dad was home.”

I looked down at my daughter.

She smiled up at me, a real, bright smile.

I knelt and hugged her as tight as I could.

May you like

It was over.

Or so I thought.
