**I knew something was wrong the moment I opened the front door and heard my mother crying.**

**My wife, Rachel, was standing in the living room.**

**My seventy-year-old mother, Evelyn, was backed against the couch.**

**“Rachel, stop!” my mother cried.**

**Then my wife slapped her across the face.**

**I dropped my work bag.**

**“What the hell are you doing?”**

**Rachel turned around in shock.**

**“Michael, wait. You don’t understand.”**

**I didn’t wait.**

**I rushed across the room and slapped Rachel.**

**“Don’t ever touch my mother again!”**

**Rachel stumbled backward and pressed a hand to her cheek.**

**My mother immediately grabbed my arm.**

**“Michael, no!”**

**I stared at her.**

**“She just hit you!”**

**Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.**

**“Ask your mother why.”**

**My mother suddenly went silent.**

**I looked between them.**

**“What happened?”**

**Rachel pointed toward the kitchen table.**

**There was a folder sitting beside my mother’s purse.**

**“She came here while you were at work.”**

**My mother whispered, “Rachel…”**

**“No,” Rachel snapped. “He deserves to know.”**

**I opened the folder.**

**Inside were copies of our mortgage papers and bank statements.**

**Then I saw a document with my signature on it.**

**Except I had never signed it.**

**“What is this?”**

**My mother started shaking.**

**Rachel looked straight at me.**

**“Your mother tried to make me sign the house over to her.”**

**“That’s a lie,” Mom whispered.**

**Rachel reached for her phone.**

**“I knew she’d say that.”**

**She opened a video recorded from our kitchen.**
