Chapter 1

I came home from my business trip two days early to surprise my husband—then watched him unlock our front door with another woman’s hand wrapped around his waist.

My flight landed in Atlanta just after midnight.

I didn’t tell Daniel I was coming home early.

I imagined slipping into bed beside him and watching his face when he woke up.

Instead, my Uber stopped across the street and I saw Daniel getting out of a car.

A woman stepped out behind him.

He kissed her before they even reached our porch.

I couldn’t move.

Then Daniel opened the door to the house we had bought together six years earlier.

She laughed and followed him inside.

I told the driver to keep the engine running.

Through the living-room window, I watched Daniel pour her a drink.

Then she picked up one of our framed wedding photos.

“You still haven’t gotten rid of this?”

Daniel laughed.

“Soon.”

My hands started shaking.

I quietly unlocked the back door with my own key.

Their voices carried from upstairs.

“Your wife really believes you’re working tonight?”

“She believes everything I tell her.”

I started recording on my phone.

Then the woman said something that stopped me cold.

“After she signs those papers, the house is ours.”

Papers?

I had never agreed to sell our house.

I stepped into the hallway.

Daniel came downstairs first.

The moment he saw me, every bit of color disappeared from his face.

“Sarah?”

The woman appeared behind him wearing my robe.

Daniel immediately said, “This isn’t what you think.”

I almost laughed.

“Then explain why she’s wearing my clothes.”

The woman crossed her arms.

“She deserves to know, Daniel.”

He snapped, “Shut up, Lauren.”

I recognized that name.

Lauren wasn’t some stranger from his office.

She was the real-estate attorney Daniel had introduced to me three months earlier.

Then my eyes landed on an envelope sitting beside his laptop.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it before Daniel could stop me.

Inside were documents transferring ownership of our house.

And at the bottom of the final page was my signature.

Except I had never signed it.

I looked up at Daniel.

He wasn’t begging anymore.

He was staring behind me in terror.

I turned around.

Someone else had just entered the house with a key.

And when I saw who it was, I finally understood why Daniel had been so confident I would lose everything.
