Chapter 1

I Came Home Early and Found My Son Locked in a Bedroom—Then He Told Me Who Ordered It

I knew something was wrong the second I walked into my mother-in-law’s house in Dallas.

My seven-year-old son, Ethan, always ran to the door when he heard my car.

That afternoon, the house was completely silent.

“Ethan?” I called.

My mother-in-law, Margaret, appeared from the kitchen and froze when she saw me.

“You’re back early.”

“Where’s my son?”

She folded her arms.

“He needed to learn a lesson.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?”

“He was disrespectful, so I put him in the guest room.”

I rushed down the hallway and grabbed the doorknob.

It was locked from the outside.

“Margaret, open this door.”

“He can come out when he apologizes.”

I stared at her.

“How long has he been in there?”

She didn’t answer.

I started pounding on the door.

“Ethan, sweetheart, are you okay?”

A tiny voice came from inside.

“Mom?”

My hands started shaking.

“Please open it. I’m hungry.”

I turned toward Margaret.

“When did he last eat?”

She shrugged.

“This morning.”

It was almost seven at night.

I grabbed the spare key from the hallway drawer and unlocked the door.

Ethan was sitting on the floor beside the bed, clutching his stomach.

The second he saw me, he started crying.

I dropped beside him and pulled him into my arms.

Margaret stood behind me and said, “Maybe now he’ll respect adults.”

Then Ethan whispered something into my ear.

“Grandma said Daddy told her to lock me in.”

I slowly looked toward the front door.

At that exact moment, my husband’s car pulled into the driveway.
