Chapter 8

The next two weeks were a blur.

FBI interviews.

Depositions.

Paperwork.

So much paperwork.

Michael was out on bail.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

A joke compared to what he’d stolen.

But he couldn’t leave the state.

Had to surrender his passport.

Had to check in with a probation officer every week.

He spent his days talking to reporters.

Spinning his lies.

I spent mine working.

Running the company.

Designing.

Building.

Every project got better.

Every client got more of my attention.

Because I had nothing to go home to anymore.

No cheating husband waiting.

No lies to pretend not to see.

Just me and my work.

And it was glorious.

The first crack in Michael’s facade came three weeks after his arrest.

Vanessa Collins called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something made me.

“Mari?” she said. Her voice was shaky. Nothing like the confident woman I’d seen outside the courthouse.

“Vanessa.”

“I need to talk to you. In person. Please. It’s important.”

“I have nothing to say to you.”

“Please,” she begged. “I have information. About Michael. About things he did that the FBI doesn’t know about. Things that will put him away for the rest of his life. I’ll tell you everything. I’ll testify. I just need… I need protection.”

I was silent.

“Michael knows I left him,” she continued, her voice cracking. “He’s been calling me. Threatening me. Saying I ruined everything. Saying if I talk to anyone, he’ll… he’ll hurt me. I’m scared, Mari. Really scared.”

I thought about it.

Dad’s voice echoed in my head.

Don’t trust her.

She’s just as bad as he is.

But then I thought of the three million dollars.

Of the forged documents.

Of the look on Michael’s face when he’d told me I didn’t know how to hold on to a man.

“Where do you want to meet?”

“Public. Somewhere crowded. The Starbucks on Michigan. One hour.”

“One hour,” I said.

I hung up.

Called Dad immediately.

“I’m going,” I said before he could protest. “But I’m not going alone. You and Uncle Tomas come. And Carlos. And two of his biggest cousins. We’ll be in the background. She’ll never see you. If this is a trap… we’ll be ready.”

Dad sighed.

“Okay. But if she so much as looks at you wrong—”

“I know.”

I walked into Starbucks an hour later.

Vanessa was already there.

Huddled in a corner booth.

Sunglasses inside.

Hood up.

She looked nothing like the woman who’d laughed at me outside the courthouse.

She looked terrified.

I sat across from her.

“Talk.”

She looked around nervously.

Leaned forward.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Michael didn’t just steal money from you,” she said. “He stole designs too. Your designs. For the last two years, he’s been taking your unfinished plans. Your concept sketches. Your proprietary materials lists. He’s been selling them to your competitors. For hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

I froze.

That explained it.

For two years, I’d been losing bids to smaller firms.

Firms that somehow had access to my exact ideas.

My exact pricing.

My exact color palettes.

I’d thought I was losing my touch.

I’d worked harder.

Longer.

For nothing.

Because Michael had been selling me out from under my own roof.

“Who?” I said, my voice ice cold.

“Everyone,” she said. “Thompson Designs. Elite Interiors. Luxe Spaces. All of them. Michael met them at that club you’re a member of. The Sapphire Room. He’d sell them your latest plans for twenty, thirty thousand a pop. Sometimes more for the big hotel projects.”

“Proof?”

She slid a USB drive across the table.

“Everything. Emails. Bank transfers. Photos of the plans he took. Dates. Times. Names. I kept copies of everything. I knew… I knew someday he’d turn on me too.”

I stared at the drive.

This changed everything.

This wasn’t just fraud anymore.

This was industrial espionage.

Intellectual property theft.

Conspiracy to destroy a business.

Another ten years minimum.

Maybe more.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked.

She finally looked me in the eye.

“Because I was stupid,” she said quietly. “I thought he loved me. I thought he was going to leave you and marry me and we’d be rich. But he never loved anyone but himself. He used me. Just like he used you. Just like he used Diego. And now that everything’s falling apart… he’s going to make sure he takes everyone down with him. I’d rather see him rot in prison than let him hurt me. Or anyone else ever again.”

She stood up.

“The FBI has my number. Tell them to call. I’ll testify against him. Against Diego. Against anyone. I just want it over.”

She left.

I picked up the USB drive.

Felt its weight in my hand.

Dad emerged from the next booth.

Uncle Tomas was beside him.

Carlos and his cousins were by the door.

“You get everything?” Dad asked.

I nodded.

“More than we ever imagined.”

Uncle Tomas took the drive.

“I’ll have our forensics team go through this tonight. If what she says is true… Michael won’t be getting out of prison until he’s an old man.”

I looked out the window.

Vanessa was walking down the street.

Alone.

Scared.

She’d gotten what she deserved.

We all had, in our own way.

May you like

But Michael?

His reckoning was just beginning.
