Chapter 1

Exactly five days after an emergency C-section that Grant hadn’t even bothered to show up for, I took a taxi home from the hospital holding our newborn daughter Maisie against my chest, my stitches throbbing with every step the doctor had warned me not to take, and walked in to find a strange woman’s silver heels by the stairs, my cream silk robe on the marketing consultant he’d hired six months earlier, and Grant acting like I was the one who’d rudely interrupted something important.

His mother Vivian had been living in our guest suite for weeks claiming she’d be there to help with the baby, yet she’d refused to drive me to the hospital when my labor started because giving birth was just something women had always managed; now she looked at Sienna wearing my clothes, showed zero surprise, and coldly ordered me to take the child back downstairs because a successful man like her son needed peace and quiet, not my endless nagging.

I counted the nineteen separate missed calls I’d made to him from the operating room while they were cutting our daughter out of me, and something inside my soul shifted forever; I looked from one cold, entitled face to the other and realized none of them had any idea that the mansion, Grant’s fancy sports car, and the very company he bragged about building were all secretly owned by me through a holding company my father had set up before we ever got married.
