Chapter 12

The world seemed to stop.

Married.

Alexander was married.

Isabella Rodriguez moved closer, her eyes never leaving mine.

"You must be Emma Hartwell. I've heard so much about you. All good things, of course. My husband has become quite... obsessed with you lately."

Alexander's jaw clenched.

"Isabella, this is neither the time nor the place."

"Oh, I think it's the perfect time and place," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "You've been parading yourself around Chicago as a single man, courting the famous Emma Hartwell, while your wife waits at home in Miami. I thought someone should set the record straight."

She turned back to me.

"We've been married for eight years, Ms. Hartwell. Separated for the last two, but still legally bound. Alex has been trying to get a divorce, but I've been... reluctant. He wants to marry you, you know. Or at least, he wants what you represent. The Hartwell name. The company. The respectability he's always craved but never deserved."

I looked at Alexander.

His face was a mask of controlled fury.

"Is everything she's saying true?" I asked.

He hesitated.

Just for a second.

But that second was all I needed.

"Yes," he said quietly. "But it's not what you think. Isabella and I have been separated for two years. The divorce is just... complicated. Business interests. Family money. It's being handled."

"Complicated," Isabella repeated with a laugh. "That's one word for it. Or you could tell her the truth. You could tell her that you've been lying to her from the moment you set foot in Chicago. That your little investment in Hartwell Group is just the first step in a plan to take over the company, marry Emma, and then destroy her just like your half-brother tried to do."

The people around us had started to notice.

Whispers spread.

Cameras flashed.

This would be in every newspaper and on every gossip website by morning.

Alexander reached for my arm.

"Emma, let me explain—"

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

I looked from him to Isabella, then back again.

"I don't know what game you two are playing. But I want no part of it. Stay away from me. Stay away from my company. And if you think I'm going to let you use Hartwell Group as a pawn in your marriage, you're both sadly mistaken."

I turned and walked away.

Alexander tried to follow, but Isabella blocked his path.

I didn't look back.

I left the gala, got in my car, and drove.

I didn't know where I was going at first.

I just needed to get away.

To think.

To process.

Alexander was married.

And according to his wife, his entire relationship with me had been a lie.

A plan to take over Hartwell Group.

To destroy me.

Just like Marcus.

I felt sick.

How could I have been so stupid?

How could I have let him charm me?

How could I have started to trust him, even a little?

Grace had been right.

I had been playing with fire.

And I had gotten burned.

I ended up at the cemetery.

My mother's grave was on a small hill overlooking the city.

I sat on the grass beside it, the cold seeping through my dress.

"I'm sorry, Mom," I whispered. "I almost made the same mistake again. I almost let another Vale destroy everything."

The wind rustled through the trees.

Somewhere in the distance, a siren wailed.

I stayed there for a long time, thinking about my mother, about Marcus, about Alexander.

About the pattern of my life.

Vale men had been hurting my family for years.

First Richard, with his affair and his secret son.

Then Victoria, who had killed my mother.

Then Marcus, who had abused me and tried to destroy my father.

And now Alexander.

The cycle had to end.

With me.

I stood up, brushing the grass from my dress.

I was done being a victim.

Done being manipulated.

Done letting the Vales control my life.

If Alexander wanted a war, I would give him one.

And this time, I would be the one who won.

I called Diane from the car.

"We need to move," I told her. "Everything Isabella said tonight... it confirms what we've suspected all along. Alexander is planning to take over Hartwell Group. We need to find proof. And we need to stop him before it's too late."

Diane was calm and professional, even though it was nearly midnight.

"I'll have the team start first thing in the morning. We'll dig into Isabella's claims. We'll look at Alexander's finances, his business dealings, his communications. If he's planning something, we'll find it."

"Good," I said. "And Diane? Make sure you look into his marriage. Isabella said the divorce is complicated because of business interests. I want to know what those interests are. I want to know everything."

I hung up.

I was driving back to my apartment when my phone rang again.

Alexander's name appeared on the screen.

I didn't answer.

He called again.

And again.

Finally, he sent a text.

Emma, please. Let me explain.

Isabella is dangerous. She's lying about almost everything.

But she's right about one thing—I am planning something.

Just not what you think.

Meet me tomorrow. At the lighthouse. Midnight.

I'll tell you everything.

I stared at the message.

The lighthouse.

The same place Margaret had told me about my mother's murder.

The same place where my life had changed forever.

I should say no.

I should block his number.

I should have him removed from the board and launch a full-scale war.

But something stopped me.

Isabella had been convincing.

But there had been something in Alexander's eyes when he looked at me.

Something that looked almost like... desperation.

And hope.

Maybe he was lying.

Maybe he was telling the truth.

Either way, I had to know.

I texted back one word.

Fine.

The next day was torture.

The news of the gala incident was everywhere.

"ALEXANDER RODRIGUEZ SECRETLY MARRIED!"

"LOVE TRIANGLE ROCKS HARTWELL BOARDROOM!"

"EMMA HARTWELL: ANOTHER VALE SCANDAL!"

The board called an emergency meeting.

Harold Bennett demanded Alexander's immediate removal.

Sarah Chen was furious.

"You lied to us, Mr. Rodriguez! You presented yourself as a single man! You used your personal relationship with Ms. Hartwell to gain influence in this company! That's a breach of trust! A breach of fiduciary duty!"

Alexander sat calmly through the tirade.

When they were finished, he spoke.

"I won't deny that I'm married. Or that my marriage is... complicated. But I never lied about my intentions toward Hartwell Group. My investment is real. My commitment to this company is real. And whatever my personal life may look like, it has no bearing on my ability to serve as a director."

He looked at me.

"I would like the chance to explain myself to the board. To all of you. But I need a little more time. Twenty-four hours. That's all I ask."

Stanton looked at me.

"Emma?"

I held Alexander's gaze.

"Twenty-four hours," I said. "But after that, no more secrets."

The board agreed.

Reluctantly.

That night, I went to the lighthouse.

I told Diane where I was going.

She insisted on having agents nearby, just in case.

I agreed.

Alexander was waiting for me.

He looked tired.

His suit was rumpled.

His hair was messy.

He looked like a man who had been through hell.

"Thank you for coming," he said.

"I'm here. Talk."

He took a deep breath.

"Isabella and I were married eight years ago. It was a business arrangement. Her family is wealthy. Powerful. They helped me build my company. In exchange, I married her and gave her the social status she craved."

He paused.

"The marriage was never happy. We fought constantly. She was cruel, manipulative, and greedy. Two years ago, I couldn't take it anymore. I left. I filed for divorce. But she refused to go quietly. She threatened to destroy me. To expose secrets from my past. Secrets that could ruin everything I've built."

"What kind of secrets?" I asked.

Alexander looked away.

"The kind that involve my father. And Vale Capital. And things I did when I was younger, things I'm not proud of. Isabella has evidence. If she releases it, I could lose everything. My company. My reputation. Maybe even my freedom."

He turned back to me.

"But that's not why I came to Chicago. Not really. I came because of you."

I laughed bitterly.

"Spare me, Alexander. Your wife told me the truth. You came to take over Hartwell Group. To marry me for my name and my company. Just like Marcus."

"No," he said fiercely. "That's not true. Yes, I saw an opportunity in Hartwell Group. Yes, I invested because I believed the company was undervalued. But I never intended to take it over. And I never intended to use you. When I first saw you... at the trial... when you testified against Marcus... I saw something in you. Strength. Courage. Something I had never seen in anyone else."

He stepped closer.

"I know you don't believe me. I know you have every reason to hate me. To hate my family. But what I feel for you... it's real. And Isabella knows it. That's why she came to Chicago. That's why she's trying to destroy us. She'd rather see me ruined than see me happy with someone else."

His words stirred something inside me.

Something I didn't want to feel.

"If what you're saying is true," I said, my voice shaking, "then prove it. Give me something I can believe. Something that shows me you're not just another Vale liar."

Alexander reached into his pocket and pulled out a small USB drive.

"Here. Everything you need. Evidence of Isabella's blackmail. Communications between her and her lawyers. Records showing that she's been trying to sabotage my business for years. And... something else."

He hesitated.

"Information about my father. About the things he did. The things he was involved in before he died. Things that even Victoria and Marcus didn't know about. Things that could... well, let's just say they explain a lot about why my family is the way it is."

I took the drive.

"Why are you giving me this?"

"Because I trust you," he said simply. "Because I'm tired of secrets. Tired of lies. And because if I'm going to have any chance with you... any chance at all... I have to be completely honest. About everything."

He looked out at the lake.

"Isabella isn't going to stop. She'll keep coming after me. After us. After Hartwell Group. She's going to try to destroy everything I care about. And I need your help to stop her."

I looked at the USB drive in my hand.

Then I looked at Alexander.

His eyes were sincere.

Desperate.

Hopeful.

Was he telling the truth?

Or was this just another Vale manipulation?

I didn't know.

But I was going to find out.

"I'll look at this," I said. "And if what you've given me is real... if you're telling the truth... we'll talk about what comes next. But if I find out you're lying to me, Alexander... if this is just another game..."

I let the threat hang in the air.

He nodded.

"I understand. And I accept whatever you decide. But please, Emma. Don't make your decision until you've seen everything. Until you know the whole truth."

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, the waves crashed against the shore.

And somewhere in the darkness, Alexander Rodriguez watched me go.

A man with too many secrets.

And a woman who had been burned too many times.

May you like

The game was far from over.

And the stakes had never been higher.
