Chapter 3

Rachel stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at the weapon as though he had forgotten he was holding it.

Then he saw Mia through the car window.

His face crumpled.

“What happened to her?”

Rachel placed herself directly between Daniel and the car.

“Put the gun down.”

Daniel stared at the dust covering Mia’s yellow dress.

His gaze moved to Claire.

“What did you do?”

Claire shook her head frantically.

“Daniel, it wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

“What did you do to my daughter?”

“I was trying to protect her.”

“You put her in a hole!” Rachel shouted.

Daniel’s hand tightened around the pistol.

Claire recoiled.

Dr. Vale stepped forward.

“Daniel, lower the weapon.”

Daniel swung toward him.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I came because Claire called me.”

Daniel looked at his sister.

“You called him?”

“I didn’t know what else to do.”

“You were supposed to get the files and leave.”

Rachel’s mind caught on the word.

“Files?”

No one answered.

She held up the bracelet.

“Daniel, why were you at St. Catherine’s?”

His anger vanished.

For a few seconds, he looked lost.

Then he looked at Claire.

“You told her?”

“Mia found the bracelet.”

Daniel slowly lowered the pistol.

Rachel did not relax.

“Put it on the ground.”

“Rachel—”

“On the ground.”

He obeyed.

The weapon touched the porch boards.

Dr. Vale moved toward it, but Daniel kicked it behind him.

“Don’t.”

Rachel took out her phone again.

Daniel stepped off the porch.

“If you call the police, they’ll take Mia.”

Rachel almost thought she had misheard him.

“What did you say?”

“They’ll take her away from both of us.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward the car.

Mia was watching through the window.

Tears had carved pale lines through the dust on her cheeks.

Daniel turned away from the sight.

“Because legally,” he said, “Mia may not be our daughter.”

The world became silent.

Rachel heard the wind moving through the trees.

She heard a bird calling from the fence.

She heard her own heartbeat.

“That’s impossible.”

“I wish it were.”

Rachel crossed the distance between them.

“Explain what you mean.”

Daniel rubbed his bruised temple.

His fingers shook.

“Four years ago, the night Mia was born, there was a power failure at the hospital.”

“I remember.”

“The backup system failed in part of the maternity wing. Records were delayed. Identification tags were handwritten.”

Rachel remembered the darkness.

The frightened nurses.

The hours she spent unconscious after emergency surgery.

When she woke, Daniel had placed Mia in her arms.

Their daughter had been tiny and warm.

Rachel had loved her before she could even focus her eyes.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Last month, Claire found a box in Dad’s warehouse.”

Claire stared at the ground.

“There were hospital records inside,” Daniel continued. “Records from the night Mia was born.”

“Why would your father have them?”

“Because Dad paid someone at the hospital.”

“For what?”

Daniel’s throat moved.

“To switch two babies.”

Rachel struck him.

The sound cracked through the yard.

Daniel did not defend himself.

He stood with his head turned, a red mark forming across his cheek.

Dr. Vale looked away.

Claire began crying harder.

Rachel’s hand burned.

“You knew?”

“Not until last month.”

“You knew for a month?”

“I was trying to confirm it.”

“Without telling me?”

“I didn’t know how.”

“You open your mouth and say the words!”

Mia knocked on the car window.

Rachel turned immediately.

Her daughter looked terrified again.

Rachel forced herself to breathe.

She opened the door and knelt beside her.

“It’s okay.”

“Why did you hit Daddy?”

“Mommy got angry.”

“Is Daddy bad?”

Daniel made a broken sound behind them.

Rachel brushed dirt from Mia’s hair.

“No one is taking you away from me.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

She kissed Mia’s forehead.

Then she closed the door and faced Daniel.

“Who was the other baby?”

Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.

“That is what I went to St. Catherine’s to find out.”

“And?”

“The records show two girls were born within nine minutes of each other. You delivered Mia. The other mother was named Elena Ruiz.”

Rachel’s knees weakened, but she stayed upright.

“What happened to Elena’s baby?”

Daniel said nothing.

Dr. Vale answered.

“She died.”

Rachel looked at him.

“When?”

“Six weeks after birth.”

The words landed slowly.

Rachel turned back to Daniel.

“If Mia was switched, then my biological daughter—”

“May have been the child who died,” Daniel finished.

Rachel covered her mouth.

She saw a faceless infant.

A baby she had never held.

A child who may have spent six weeks in someone else’s arms.

Then she looked at Mia.

Alive.

Frightened.

Hers.

Whatever blood said, Mia was hers.

“Why would your father switch them?”

Claire wiped her face.

“Because Elena Ruiz worked for him.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“She had an affair with him.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Rachel stared at Claire.

“Elena’s baby was your father’s child?”

“Yes.”

“Your half sister.”

Claire nodded.

Rachel felt sick.

Their father had arranged for his newborn daughter to enter Daniel’s family.

But why?

“Dad was dying,” Daniel said. “He had already been diagnosed with cancer. He wanted his youngest child raised as a Mercer without anyone knowing about the affair.”

“So he stole my baby?”

“We don’t know if the switch happened.”

“You just said—”

“The records suggest it. They don’t prove which child left with which family.”

“What records?”

Daniel glanced at the shed.

Claire stiffened.

Rachel noticed.

“The files are in there, aren’t they?”

“No,” Claire said too quickly.

Daniel stared at her.

“You told me you hadn’t found them.”

“I didn’t.”

“Then why did you put Mia in the pit?”

Claire’s face hardened.

It was the first glimpse Rachel had seen of the woman beneath the fear.

“Because she followed me.”

“To the shed?”

Claire said nothing.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“What did she see?”

“Nothing.”

Mia’s voice came faintly through the partly opened window.

“I saw Aunt Claire burning pictures.”

All four adults turned toward the car.

Claire’s expression collapsed.

Daniel rushed past Rachel and seized the shed door.

It was locked.

“Give me the key.”

Claire backed away.

“I don’t have it.”

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

“Where is the key?”

Dr. Vale intervened.

“That is enough.”

Daniel shoved the doctor away.

“You knew what she was doing.”

“I knew she was frightened.”

“She tried to bury my daughter!”

“I did not bury her!” Claire screamed. “I hid her for ten minutes because she saw the photograph!”

Rachel’s blood chilled.

“What photograph?”

Claire slapped a hand over her mouth.

Too late.

Daniel dragged a rusted gardening tool from beside the shed and struck the lock.

Once.

Twice.

On the third blow, the latch broke.

He pulled the door open.

The smell of smoke rolled into the yard.

Inside, a metal barrel held the remains of a small fire.

Half-burned papers lay around it.

Photographs curled in the heat.

Daniel entered.

Rachel told Mia to remain in the car, then followed him.

She did not trust Claire near her child, but she needed to see.

The shed was filled with old furniture and sealed boxes.

Daniel dropped beside the barrel.

He pulled out a damaged photograph.

Rachel looked over his shoulder.

It showed Daniel’s father standing beside a young woman with dark hair.

Elena.

She was visibly pregnant.

On the back, a message remained legible beneath the burn marks.

Our daughter will inherit everything.

Rachel heard Claire gasp behind them.

Daniel turned.

“What does this mean?”

Claire was standing in the doorway.

Dr. Vale had one hand on her shoulder.

She appeared ready to run.

Daniel moved toward her with the photograph.

“You said Dad left the property equally between us.”

“He did.”

“No. He left it to his youngest daughter.”

Claire’s eyes flicked toward Mia.

Rachel understood.

“If Mia is Elena’s biological child,” she said, “then Mia inherited everything.”

Claire’s silence confirmed it.

The farmhouse.

The warehouse.

The surrounding land.

Perhaps money Rachel knew nothing about.

Daniel’s family fortune had never been as large as people believed, but the property alone was worth millions.

“You weren’t hiding the hospital secret to protect Mia,” Rachel said.

Claire stepped away from Dr. Vale.

“You don’t know what I sacrificed for this family.”

“You put a four-year-old in a pit because she found proof that she owns the estate.”

“I was going to bring her out.”

“When?”

Claire’s face twisted.

Rachel suddenly knew the answer.

Not in ten minutes.

Not ever.

Claire looked toward the driveway.

Another vehicle was approaching.

This one belonged to the county sheriff’s office.

Relief flooded Rachel.

Then Daniel whispered, “I didn’t call them.”

Dr. Vale looked alarmed.

Claire smiled.

It was faint.

Cold.

Triumphant.

“I did,” she said.

The patrol car stopped.

A deputy stepped out.

May you like

Claire ran toward him.

“She has a gun!” she screamed, pointing at Rachel. “She threatened to kill us!”
