Justice Department Launches Criminal Probe into Trump Accuser E. Jean Carroll

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES CRIMINAL PROBE INTO E. JEAN CARROLL FOR POTENTIAL PERJURY IN LAWSUITS AGAINST PRESIDENT TRUMP

The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into writer E. Jean Carroll, the high-profile accuser in two civil cases against President Donald J. Trump. The probe focuses on potential perjury stemming from Carroll’s 2022 deposition testimony, in which she stated under oath that no one else was covering her legal expenses.

Investigators are now examining reports that billionaire Reid Hoffman, a prominent Trump critic, helped fund portions of her legal costs through a nonprofit organization.

Carroll won two civil cases against Trump: a $5 million verdict in 2023 for sexual abuse and defamation, and an $83.3 million defamation award in 2024. President Trump has appealed both rulings.

This latest development marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration’s commitment to restoring integrity and accountability across the justice system.

“For far too long, powerful interests have used the courts as a weapon while hiding behind false statements,” a senior DOJ official told reporters on background. “No one is above the law — not even those who target the President.”
